msbrookins 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I just wanted to gauge how many of you had to do the pre-op diet before surgery and those that didn't. I was told yesterday, by my surgery consultant, that since my BMI was 45..I didn't have to worry about the pre-op diet.. Does that sound right to you?:help:
Mvpo8961 1 Posted July 12, 2006 I had to do South Beach phase 1 for 7 - 10 days before surgery. My surgeon told me that at the annual bariatric conference this past spring that the docs are starting to move away for an all liquid diet preop. M
ousooner 1 Posted July 12, 2006 My doctor did not have me do a pre-op diet. I am thankful for that. I did well, but struggled a little bit during the 6 weeks post op liquids. I don't know if I could have made it two weeks before the band.
sleepyjean 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I didn't have a pre-op diet either.
Melissa Lea 1 Posted July 12, 2006 My doctor recommended a low carbohydrate diet pre-op to shrink the liver as much as I could. However, I didn't follow that very well :faint: . I did just fine in my surgery and now on my 5th week post op. Melissa Lea Spivak 06/09/
TexasTerry 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I just had to do a high Protein, low carb diet for 2 weeks before surgery. Terry

I was told yesterday, by my surgery consultant, that since my BMI was 45..I didn't have to worry about the pre-op diet.. Does that sound right to you?:help: My doctor said he'd like me to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery, to help shrink my liver. He said I could do it any way I wanted, since I had some time he suggested low-fat Protein, veggies and very limited carbs. My BMI was 53. So, I walk out, thinking I have lots of time(10 weeks) and promptly gain 6 pounds with a bad case of "last supper syndrome). I'm on track now!
Dody 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I will be banded on July 18 and I'm on a pre-op diet for 7 days of Carnation Instant Breakfast, Vitamins, Water and decaffienated 0 calories beverages only. I am into the 4th day and very sick of Carnation Instant Breakfast. I have a lower BMI also.
marys 2 Posted July 12, 2006 I was lower bmi patient and still had to do it but i scheduled so quickly i only had a week. Even so i lost 4lbs mostly out of fright - my doc still recommends it for all of his patients as it is suppossed to shrink the liver - i was into anything that might nake the surgery easier - always best to go by what doc says. Linds 0 Posted July 12, 2006 I had to do a week pre-op diet of yogurt only!!! Yuk...managed it and lost weight....it was meant to help shrink the liver to aid the lap procedure. Must admit I find it hard to stomach yogurts now!!
juliegeraci 7 Posted July 12, 2006 Just had to do 1 day of liquids prior to surgery. Easy.
jojo41 0 Posted July 13, 2006 No pre-op diet for me either. My surgeon only recommends pre-op diets for people with BMI over 50.
Mrs. P 0 Posted July 13, 2006 I had to do a two week liquid diet (Glucerna, two servings juice, two servings yougurt per day) prior to surgery. I have a much higher BMI. The diet was to shrink my liver and make the surgery safer and easier. They said it would also cut down on nausea, sickness after surgery and make the recovery easier. From what I've been told my surgery went really well and I've had no nausea, vomitting or gas pains whatsoever. I contribute doing so well to the pre-op diet preparing my body...plus I lost 15 lbs in the process
msbrookins 0 Posted July 13, 2006 Thanks Everyone, I just wanted to make sure that what I was told is what should happen. I still don't get the BMI issue since some with lower BMI's have had to do the pre-op diet. I think I'll just do liquids the day before, which I'm sure won't be a problem since I'm sure I'll be a nervous wreck.
