Help w/ Post Op Diet

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to figure out the post op diet from Dr. Kelly. I was sent some paperwork before surgery and then given another one before I left the hospital after surgery. Well, the 2 things don't match!! If other patients of his could please tell me what progression they had and on what days post op I'd appreciate the help.

Hey Peppercma,

I have sort of drawn middle of the road between the two. Firstly, I listened to my bod though. I had FF milk on day 8, and on day 13...I had Protein shake...and I think that's the day I started runny cream of wheat. The next day I had runny mashed pots...I never had an issue as long as I listened. I sort of took week 3 and had thick liquids, ricotta bake, all the way to puree style stuff.

By the end of my 3rd week, I had tuna salad (pretty mushy and done in the cuisinart); my thickest food yet. It didn't move 'great'...but chicken salad did. I also had scrambled and soft poached egg that week. The beginning of the 4th, I had meatloaf (OMG) and strangely, beef moved better than tuna. chicken, baked fish, they all are a "go" for me.

I'm 29 days today, just starting week 5...that's where I'm at. I think I am about 4 day's ahead of the fastest schedule? Anyway...that's just me. I really didn't see much difference between "thick soups" and purees except the content of such.

I'm almost hitting 90 oz Water daily too.

How are you doing hon?

Susan

I'm doing well. Thanks for the info. I'm not having any problems getting my clears down, just getting used to how they feel when they hit the tummy. I thought my "bubbles" were over, but this is a new kind of bubbling. Today was the first day I could really drink anything as compared to baby sips. I'm just ready to get to some thicker stuff like the cream of wheat and pudding, etc. This liquid thing is getting pretty old.

I had a strawberry banana smoothie at the mall today. Sometimes I just forget that I've had this done. It was after my first sip that I remembered I really shouldn't be having it. But then I thought about all the people who are on the kind of diet that says as long as it's pureed and can go thru a straw (which I do use sometimes) they can eat anything. So, I tried it out very slowly. It went down great and actually felt kinda filling. But, the dairy in it definitely caused some gas :D.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
