2nd Day PostOp hardly any liquids!!!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have been a lurker here since before my surgery. I had the VSG on Wednesday the 3rd. My first day post op(yesterday) I had a lot of difficulty even keeping down Water. Today is my 2nd day post op and I was discharged from the hospital this morning. All day I have only been able to take in 4-5 of the 1-oz med cups of water and homemade clear chicken Soup (strained). I do not feel like I have any energy at all. Is this normal?

I was really tired early out too. It seemed like all I did was sip and sleep (Instead of R&R, it's S&S haha). So don't feel bad about that. I could barely get in the recommended amount of liquids, and I'm sure some days I didn't. But it's just important to stay hydrated if you can!

I think that is normal. Your stomach is still very swollen inside. There is very little room in there. I am over a week post op. It gets easier. For some reason liquids are easier to get down than Protein shakes. I don't dislike the Protein Shakes, there just doesn't seem to be much room when I start sipping them.

My doctor told me today he won't even let us out until we have 64 oz of Fluid in one day - he said if you only get 32 oz in one day you need to get 64 oz + 32 oz the next day. Don't get behind!

Try getting some of your liquids from sugar free popsicles. I found out that it's much easier to get liquids in very slowly in the beginning. Don't worry too much over getting all your Protein in the first couple of days- but make sure you do stay hydrated.

I am so worried because I feel I might get dehydrated this way. 15 oz of fluids are not really anything....

What have I done to myself? Does this get better?

you MUST MUST get more liquid in. keep sipping from a medicine cup. I could not tolerate Water for almost 3 weeks. I drank powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup, diet Decaf tea, diet lemonade and sugar free popscicles were my best friend.

Surgery is rough but dehydration is MUCH worse. It will get better and you will be able to tolerate more liquids as the days go on. Good Luck and DRINK

I had a hard time getting liquids down too, and the past 2 days I have had a hard time with my Protein. Today, I slept and rested most of the day, and hoping tomorrow will be a better day. The first 3 days were really sore for me, then I started to feel better and did too much, and down for 2 days now. Take it slow and get your rest! My surgery was on July 27th, and I am starting to heel. I am looking forward to getting this drainage tube taking out on Monday.

I know how you feel. I'm 3 days post op and I'm just now to eat 1/2 popsicle with out throwing it up. I so want to go home from the hospital. After the popsicle, I am able to walk around the unit and I haven't gotten sick yet. I do sleep a lot. sleeping helps me forget about the nausea and pain.

Go luck and I hope you feel better soon.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
