Longterm Weight Loss Stories???

Recommended Posts

Question for all the pro-sleevers, is there anyone on here that has lost and maintained the weight loss for 5 yrs or more. I am afraid that the once I have the surgery and loose all my weight that it will creep back on like all my other diets and failed attempts. Are there any studies or testimonials from past sleevers that can say, yes this works and I have kept the weight off.

This is not a response to the post. It is actually an off topic question.

I noticed your post and several others are showing an add for slimband.com in the middle of the message. Is it a virus, a paid add or something that the members are adding to the posts? I am not saying anything aginst or for it, just want to understand as I am getting these in the posts and i had not seen them before.

Thanks

The website has added more aggresive advertising tactics just this last week. Many, many of us are VERY UNHAPPY (are you listening, VST Moderators!!) that they have done this. It's not anything we are doing as individuals.

Hoepfully they hear us and try to figure out a way to not be so obstrusive...

I don't think that there is anyone on here with 5 years of sleevetime. If there is, speak up! If you search medical journals you can find some new 5 year studies with stats. Some of them mention that weight gain is more common around 3 years. I did not look like many people gained all their weight back though....Google has a "more" category at the top of the search options, then Scholar where you can search med papers for your information. There have been some of them posted here too, in the last month, but I don't remember where... look under research for a start.

I certainly don't have 5 years - I have 5 1/2 months. For those people that gain their weight back after a time period - I don't think it is the fault of the sleeve. The sleeve is not a magic bullet and it doesn't come with a guarantee. I think the old phrase "eternal viligance is the price of freedom" is applicable to the sleeve. For the rest of my life, I will have to watch what I eat, exercise, and abide by sensible rules to get the best results wtih the sleeved stomach I have. I have a life long abusive relationship with food - the sleeve provides me the best tool to get my body into better shape. The "head issues" which caused the unhealthy behaviors need to be addressed for me to maintain a healthy size life-long. If I am successfull in addressing them, I will stay skinny/normal the rest of my life. If not, I am a clever enough person to figure a way to cheat my sleeve and gain the weight back. The sleeve is a tool to help me do that, and is helping me get healthy enough to have "a rest of my life" to be concerned about.

I don't regret having my surgery one minute - I think it is the best choice for me. Good luck in your decision, and in your sleeve-journey - if this is the way you choose to go.

If you can find any, Google Dr. Cirangle at LapSF. He has some very long term data. I sat in one of his seminars and was extremely informative. He said for his long term sleevers, about 10% of his patients will gain back about 10% of their excess weight. Those are some pretty impressive averages!!

As for anyone here, I haven't seen anyone out that long.

Here's the link to the download site for the Chrome plug-in. It doesn't come with your browser. You have to download it. It's easy peasy. :)

Several months ago I read a post on this site by a lady that had had one of the first sleeve surgeries. She was more than pleased with the results of her sleeve. It was definitely a good, positive post on the long term results of the surgery.

My mom didn't have a sleeve done but she had stomach cancer 19 years ago. Basically they removed 70% of her stomach and a small part of her esophagus. She went from 195lbs to 105. No cancer since. Her weight has never gotten over 108 in all those years!!!!! She says it's still hard to eat bread but that's it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
