Question for mothers who have been sleeved????

Recommended Posts

Hi Sleever’s I have a question. I am a single mother who will be having my surgery in November and I wanted to know how you all handled caring for your children or households after the surgery. Were you to sore to prepare meals or to exhausted to help your kids with home work. Did you have strength to clean up the house? How long were you down? How long will I need help from friends and family before I can start mommy duty again?

I have a 4 year old..1 year old.. and a husband who works crazy hours. I returned home from Mexico 5 days after surgery and was back to cleaning and running around the next day. There were times I had to sit down for a few, but I felt great! (I think most of the pain subsided after day 3...and then I just walked, ALOT which I think really helped)

Hello, I'm also am a single mother with teenagers. My daughter had all four wisdom teeth taken out two days after my surgery, I had to do my best to help her. My son tried to help but thank god it didn't take me long to recover. Family also helped out, but I was back to work (I have a daycare) within a week. Everyone is different so just be more prepared. The best advice I got was to cook and freeze some dinners. Good luck!

I haven't been sleeved yet (August 16th!) but I had a lot of the same questions you did. I am a single mom of a two year old little girl. The mommies here have been great with advice for me and are easing my anxiety.

From what I gather, I won't be able to pick her up for at least 2 months. I bought a small step stool for in the car and one for in the house. We are working on her using the step to climb in and out of her car seat (I have an SUV). I moved her baby bed next to mine - she still sneaks in to sleep with mommy, but with her bed next to mine I don't have to worry about helping her get down from my bed.

Other than getting in and out of the bathtub, I think she and I are covered. I hope everything works out for you!

It took me a little under a week to get back to normal with lifting my son (one year old) and doing all my normal Mommy duties. I still had some soreness and got tired easily, but I just took naps when he did and we did fine. Best wishes on your upcoming surgery!!

Hello! I am 8 days post op and have a 5 and 7 year old. I had a lot of help (my mom and a baby sitter) for the first week. The first 2 days home after surgery I was useless. I had helped with cooking meals, baths, entertaining, kids, etc. I had help for a week with driving the kids around. Around the 4th day home, I have some strength to do some light house cleaning. I am now 8 days post surgery and will start driving the kids and have energy to do what I need to around the house. Good luck!

It took me about 6 days before I could really do anything to help my hubby with the kids. Now I can do some chores not at much as I used to but I just rest when I get tired. I feel better after a nap or a good nights rest I think it helps me to heal. I would definitly enlist some people to help you that first week. Good luck to you sweetie! ;)

You mentioned homework, so I'm not sure how old your kid(s) are, but I was told no lifting over 10 pounds for 6 weeks. I have a 3 year old and that was a tough one. But I did NOT pick her up even once till I was just a few days away from 6 weeks. I did not want to tear anything or cause a hernia. DD would climb up into my lap, so it was not so bad. I had lots of help from DH and mother and sister for about a week and then just DH. I had an easy recovery, no pain or nausea, etc. But I did feel tired for several weeks. Nothing I couldn't handle though. You will do fine.

Good luck to you!smile.gif

I just want to take the time and thank all the mothers for there wonderful suggestions and words of encouragement. My daughter is 8 and can do most things for herself and she is a wonderful helper. I am just going to cleaning up and stock up the house before my surgery so I have everything I need. My sister will be there to help with anything I might need after surgery; and I am hoping I have a quick and painless recovery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
