Self-Inflicted Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My surgery is on August 25th and my surgeon did NOT put me on a liquid diet! I have to do Clear liquids the day before and that's it. He said something about how someone with my BMI isn't at risk and it's not necessary but "do what you can" to lose weight. I'm thinking of putting myself on a pre-op diet but I need some guidelines or suggestions. I'm thinking of either doing 3 days of liquids or a week of high Protein Atkins-style food. What do you all think?

Rachel

I did two weeks of Protein shakes for breakfast/lunch and a lean and green for dinner, which usually was a salad with grilled chicken/shrimp. Maybe a porkchop with a salad. Lots of cabbage salad. No small portions, either. I lost 10 lbs and my Dr said my liver looked great and was easy to work with.

Plus, it will get you started on your "new" lifestyle. I don't think you want to be learning a new behavior after you have the surgery.

Low carb, less than 30-40gr per day will not only get your body in fat burning mode, it'll shrink the slimy/slippery fat deposits on your liver.

I had a 49BMI right before my revision, and I didn't have a liquid pre-op diet, and the night before surgery I could have whatever I wanted. Just clear fluids after dinner then nothing by mouth after midnight.

I personally wouldn't torture yourself with liquids only. Eat lean, high Protein foods, low carbs, nothing white, cut sugar, cut flour, and you'll see results.

Great ideas. Maybe i'll do a hybrid... Protein Shake for bfast and high protein/low carb lunch and dinner. Thanks!

my doctor only required a two day liquid diet I had a 41 BMI I think that is the diet he puts all his patients on though, he also required that I be able to tolerate soft foods in order to get discharged.

I totally agree with Tiffy. I am on day 4 of the required liquid diet, and if your surgeon says you don't need it, don't put yourself through this. I have cried twice. :-( its harder than I thought!

My surgeon only requires a one-day pre-op diet. However, my surgery is on a Wednesday (8/10) and after this weekend I plan to do high-protein, low-carb with a Protein Drink for at least one meal for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before surgery. I really need to get my brain wrapped around my new eating protocols now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
