I'm finding that lots of folks are horrified that I am going to Mexico for surgery. I live in Los Angeles, we practically are in Mexico, it's only 2 hours away.

I can't take the naysayers.

I was only telling a few people. But a friend of mine said that I should let those that are close to me know or they will be disappointed. I have told maybe 8 or so. But I think I should of stuck with my gut and I can tell em later. I have been to Baja California many, many times and love it. I could care less on which side of the border I'm getting my medical care.

My surgeon is Dr. Rodriguez and I'm being sleeved on the 19th. I'm driving in and driving out.

Hi Beach Baby,

I am also being sleeved on the 19th and live in L.A.; are you doing the pre-op all liquid. I am on day 3. Where in L.A. are you? I live in the SF Valley. In terms of the naysayers. I have heard many success stories from the other side of the border, so just relax and stay posted.

Hi all! Myself and both of my parents had surgery in Tijuana on August 8th and 10th, respectively. Our surgeon was Dr. Ortiz at OCC, and he and his staff were fantastic! I has the sleeve and my parents had plication. We are all recovering very well and have nothing but rave reviews. Don't worry, you will all do great!

I am scheduled for Aug 29 in Mexico in TJ. My family is freaking because I chose TJ and are afraid of the drug wars etc. Do you feel safe when you go Beach Baby?

It worked for me, YES it IS a culture shock and they don't have the same "standards" as they have in the USA.

I was so sick and tired and going down hill I didn't think that I would survive the winter if I didn't do something right away. Typical approval process is 6 to 9 months for my insurance. I had the money, the vacation and the "want to" to do it so I did. I've lost almost 160 lbs since then.

If you are at all worried and fretting over it then by all means DON'T DO IT. Your peace of mind is worth a lot.

IMHO, don't give the naysayers a moment of your time. It's probably a good idea to just keep this information to yourself or those who have a vested interest on your life. I could count on one hand how many people I told pre-surgery... that I was even HAVING the surgery. It's honestly no ones business.

If you feel you're making the right decision and can fork over the money to have this done, then everyone else can go fly a kite. :)

It's fine down there. Tijuana a big city and there's going to be crime in any big city in the world.

I live in Los Angeles and we used to be the murder capitol of he US. I have no reservations about traveling south of the border.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
