Diabetes...Sleeve or RNY??

Recommended Posts

So, I'm all amped up to get the process started again to get the sleeve (process stopped earlier in the year when I was laid off). In the time that I was laid off and since back to work, I was diagnosed with diabetes (REALLY need some WLS now!). Well, now my bariatric Dr. says that RNY (Gastric Bypass) is the gold standard for diabetes patients, and its gives a significantly better chance of getting off meds than the sleeve. I only take pills now, but I still want to stop taking them.

Can those with, or who had diabetes give me some insight on this one? Maybe some studies or some such? Or, was the doctor right, and I should start thinking about RNY?

Thanks in advance

I'm not diabetic and still pre-op, but I seem to recall reading lots of posts on here about people who are no longer on diabetes meds since their sleeve surgery. ??

I have been diabetic since 2003. I had the surgery 3 weeks ago. I am currently off all of my diabetes medication. There are several others on the boards who are in similar situations - or at least greatly reduced medications.

Who is your surgeon? How many sleeves has he/she done total? How many RNY? Here is someone who was in your position last year. She choose to go with VSG. http://www.thinnertimesforum.com/topic/49893-vsg-type-ii-diabetes/

IMO only, sounds as if surgeon is leading you what he/she is more comfortable with or may not have enough information to compare the two. Good luck with what ever you decide is best for you!

I know doctors still say RNY is the "Gold Standard" because it's been around for so long, but I think things are changing and someday soon VSG will become the new Gold Standard.

I had type 2 diabetes. I had the surgery on 5-25-2011 and my blood numbers were back to normal about a week after surgery. Losing the weight pre-op and eating healthier is what I felt achieve this. My doctor wanted to start me on Meds once I was diagnosed but since I was going to have the surgery so soon after diagnoses, we waited to see how the surgery was going to affect the numbers.I was told by my PCP that the RNY is the best surgery for diabetes but it depends on what is causing it. We all know that weight, diet and exercising are all keys to correcting blood sugar and if these can lower your blood sugar, the sleeve will achieve this.. I was told that if you have an issue with the way your body produces or processes insulin, that the surgery, losing weight , diet or exercise might not help. If the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or your body is having issues processing it, you might still have to be on meads.

I'm six weeks pre-op, was a type 2 diabetic taking 1000 mg Metformin 2x daily and a 18mg shot of Victoza at night.

had high blood Pressure 190/115 at times, taking 15 mg of lisinopril daily...

Had high cholestorol, taking 40 mg of simvastatin daily....

Now no medication at all....:D

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
