3 days post-op and feeling great

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the forum (I've been a lurker though). I had my surgery three days ago and am pleasantly surprised at how good I feel just three days out. I haven't had nausea or vomitting. My abdomen doesn't really hurt - it just feels a little tight and sore when I use my stomach muscles. I am following all of my doctor's recommendations regarding eating slowly, taking small sips of Water, taking Vitamins, eating Protein, walking, etc.

In the three days post-op I've lost about 9 pounds. I don't expect to lose this much normally though. I didn't eat any solid food on the day of surgery or the two days after surgery.

Dahlia & Ruby,

Glad to hear you guys are doing so well! I am laying in my hospital bed right now and everything is going great. Just a bit of discomfort in the left shoulder area as is to be expected.

Mamamckinzie, where did you have your surgery? Are you at home now? I Had some upper back pain for a few days. I thought it might be gas bubbles traveling upwards

Dahlia,

Yep I am home! Was discharged last Tuesday (2nd) about 3pm. I had pain on my left side and shoulder so I used the pain meds and a heating pad. The heating pad helped alot.

My surgery was done in the Kansas City area (Overland Park , KS) at Hospital Spine & Specialty. I was able to stay pretty doped up so I was not in pain. Dr. K also give 3 rounds of a strong non steroidal called Toradol...very nice!

Been walking 30 minutes each day since Wed. Today is the best day so far. No nausea or vomiting...thank goodness. I could not tolerate the liquid lortab so I used left over vicdoin and cut it in half.

Here is to a new us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's great that you're feeling so well. I felt the same way 3 days post-op. Just be careful that you don't do too much too soon. I began feeling bored inside and one evening I went outside to help my husband a little with some light yard work. About 15 minutes later I felt really light-headed and almost fainted. He had to quickly bring me a chair and ice Water. After a few minutes I felt fine, but was a little frustrated. My body definately reminded me that I just had surgery and needed to take it easy.

I'm not sure if it was the heat or bending down (to pick sweep up leaves)..but it was too much for me. Since then I have limited my time outside. When I do go out to run errands, I make sure to park close to the store and carry ice water with me. Instead of yard work, I've decided to instead concentrate on housework (in the air conditioning)...and sit to take breaks as needed.

Yep, you're right about feeling dizzy. I have twin 8 month old girls. I put them into daycare full-time, until I get approved from doctor to lift over 20 pounds. My husband lifts them in the meantime. Honestly, I was expecting to be much more sore and achy post-op. My c-sxn was really hard to recover from and I guess I was worried that it would be just as difficult with vsg. I think it must be because it was done laproscopically. Too bad c-sxns can't be done laproscopically, then I might consider having one more child!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
