Nope it is not. I had to do one for my hysterectomy. ICK. Might be better though cause after your surgery you don't want to have to deal with it.

I was under the impression that you didn't have to do a bowel prep for a VSG because they aren't doing anything to your intestines. Guess you learn something new every day!

After 10 days of a liquid diet the bowel prep wasn't all that bad. I have to say I am glad I did it because the morning after surgery having to have a BM would not have felt good at all!

I had to drink a whole bottle of Magnesium citrate or something like that. I guess it is normally for Constipation and you drink like 2 oz, NORMALLY. Well it took forever to kick in and then it really was not that bad. I have avoided getting a colonoscopy because I heard how horrid the prep is.

I'm pretty sure that is the bowel prep they are referring to. Different surgeons approach it in their own ways but I think the idea is to help with post surgical gas. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My advice? Whatever you get to soothe your bottom for bowel prep - save the rest because it's very common to have diarrhea for the first couple of weeks. I did. Hello Charmin Freshmates and Prep H ointment!

Whatever: it's definitely worth it! I hit Overweight on the BMI scale today! I haven't seen that since the 1990s.

I asked my Dr. why we had to do a bowel prep. He said it was in case they nick your bowels he doesn't want you know what coming out like a play dough factory.

HAHAHAHA! Wow, thanks for the awesome laugh!

I had to do a bowel prep, 3 tablespoons of milk of magnesia the day before surgery. It wasn't too bad, since I was on all liquids there wasn't much there to begin with. After surgery they gave me something to "get things moving"....oh my god did it ever!!!!!! It was horrible and it kept going for days after I got home too. The gave me some stuff in the hospital to help with cleaning and protecting my very sore bum - the products are: 3M Cavilon Durable Barrier Cream and Cavilon No-Rinse Skin Cleanser. Both were incredibly helpful for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
