I went to a required support group last night. About 30 people attended, most of them were bypass surgeries. It was really interesting, and being new and not even banded yet, I kept my mouth shut. A rare thing for me. Close to the end of the 2 hour meeting I realized I knew quite a bit more about my pending proceedure than those who had already had it. The long timers who had the bypass and had already lost over 100 lbs. were complaining that their Doctors didn't give them much information and was there a way to get ideas about products, recipes etc. I couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer, I asked, isn't there a gastric bypass web site like the lapbandtalk.com site I visit. I told them how I could ask any question and I had the resources of thousands willing to share. They looked at me with this dumb founded look on their faces:doh:. They decided someone would research these types of forums for bypass patients, and I of course gave the lapbandtalk website to all those lapband patients.

I am coming to realize what a great tool I haave found for my journey. Why don't more support group leaders think to search the web? DUH

Hope to see more so cal bandsters out there. I'm spreading the word!:clap2:

Actually Hemet to be exact. I just got banded about 9 days ago and have lost about 5 lbs. I go for my first fill in Mexico next month and pray to God for some restriction, as I have zero right now! Nice to read all of your posts, definitely up for getting together with other bandsters!

Hi Everyone in So Cal. I'm new to the site, I was banded in December and still waiting on my first fill. I had surgery in Wyoming (my childhood best friend was my surgeon) but I live in Los Angeles. I am looking for a local support system. I'm near LAX. I hope some of you are still interested in meeting locally. I think it's such a good idea to have a suppory system...I don't know anyone else who has had any bariatric surgery, much less the band. Please contact me if you're interested.

Katie

Hi everyone,

I'm in the San Gabriel Valley area and work in Rancho Cucamonga. I'm still doing some more research about the Lapband. Hopefully I will get it done this year. Since my insurance is not going to pay for it, I'll have to do self-pay.

Any suggestions on Doctors? I've been to two seminars: Dr. Milton Owens and Dr. Jeremy Korman. I haven't really made a decision on which doctors to go with. So any advice, names, experience would be truly appreciated.

Thanks!

Caligirl: I had my surgery done there in Rancho at Rancho Specialty hospital. The care I was provided was really kind of impressive, everyone there was very friendly and professional. My surgeon was Dr. Douglass Krahn, he works out of Rancho, Parkview in Riverside, and Saint Bernadine in San Bernardino. I have nothing but good things to say about him. He is very professional and it seems he really cares about his patients. The only negative thing I have to say about him is that with the exception of surgery date every other appointment I have has been at least one hour late. When you go to his office you can see why it takes so long because there are always at least 10-15 people waiting to see him. I think he try’s to see to many people in one day.

If I had to do it all over again I would still go with Dr. Krahn. I have talked with a few people at support groups at Dr. Billy’s office in Thousand Oaks and people seem to be pretty happy with him also. I think you should attend a few support groups and see what actual patients have to say about different docs and keep on asking people on lapbandtalk. If you want I could give you Dr. Krahns number and address. Just send me a PM and I could get it for you. Good luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
