I just found out my surgeon is ok with it... during the full liquids portion of the diet... I was very suprised..Though the NUT said it may not make you feel very well.

I found out through my childs nurse that caffine restricts the body from absorbing Iron and Calcium. You may want to get Decaf until you can verify this (that way you won't get sick with lack of iron or calcium in your diet).

I have been told no caffeine at all as it is a diuretic.

I remember that they gave me coffee in the hospital when I had the VSG. I don't drink coffee though and didn't try it, so I don't know if it was Decaf or not.

I think it varies from doc to doc what they allow you to do. My doc says wait at least 3 months but he would prefer we wait 6 months.

From what I learned with the nutritionist, decaff coffee for me. I do on occasion, drink 1 cup of regular mixed with decaff if I'm really tired in the morning. I've done that about 3 times now without any issues.

Mine is Ok...recommends Decaf, but it's not going to put me in jeopardy because I'm one that doesn't have an issue with keeping hydrated.

2 days after my surgery, I had the choice of Lemon-Lime or Strawberry-Kiwi Gatorade...Pre-op, I would have TOTALLY gone lemon-lime, but it just didn't appeal. I tried it day 3, because it was all I had...still didn't appeal, and my tummy puckered up like "BLEH!!"

So, I caution you to listen to your bod...I think you'll find at first that just the smell of coffee is enough to satisfy...but I just didn't feel comfortable "going there." lol That's the best as I can describe it. It's been the same with some foods; very inticing, smells great...but, but...no, not yet. It's not scientific, but it's worked for me. No vomitting yet! lol

I have found that 1 half of a Starbucks Via coffee in my morning shake with some ice has satisfied the coffee craving (shoot, I live in Seattle). I've used cold coffee instead of Water in my shakes too.

I was told to avoid coffee for a few weeks, caffeinated OR Decaf, because it's acidic and is hard on you healing tummy. I've always preferred a really strong coffee every morning (if the spoon stands up in it that's about perfect for me!), but I can't say I miss it. I switched to half-caf, then decaf before surgery just to avoid having to go through caffeine withdrawal on top of everything else post-op. I occasionally put a bit of coffee in with my morning Protein shake, but it totally doesn't do a thing for me.

I think at this point I could have coffee, but as others have noted it's a diuretic, so not only does it not count towards your daily liquids, you need to drink even more Water if you have coffee than if you didn't, to counteract the effect. (Like I don't have enough trouble getting in 64 oz now!!)

I don't think you have to give it up forever, just for awhile.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
