HOw much should we eat one month post op?

Recommended Posts

Hello friends,

I am a little over a month out and seem to eat maybe 3-4 oz a meal. But get hungry like 2 hrs later...my doctor said that was normal and said to eat 5 meals everyday. But that seems like so much. I know i could eat that much, but don't want to stretch my tummy. Wish i could see my sleeve, how food goes in, so i know exactly how much is ok. Can you tell me how much you ate one month out?? And how often? Thank you!

I am a little over a month out, and can eat about 1oz of meat and maybe 2-3 Tbsp of a veggie per meal...which seems totally crazy, but I just feel so full! My plan has me eating 3 times a day, with a glass of milk about 1-2 hours after each meal to tide me over. I add carnation instant Breakfast to the milk, so I get 8oz. of fluids plus (with the carnation) 15 gr Protein, and it really does work to tide me over until the next meal.

I'm not quite there yet...but I can eat about 3/4 of a poached egg as a meal. I made the Ricotta Bakes (small ramikan) and can eat about 1/2. I can eat about 2 oz. yogurt.

Last night I had a Large Scallop.

I am 2 weeks out and can eat between 2 and 4 ounces of food depending on the food. My dietician and surgeon both have told me to eat 5 or 6 times a day and I am. It's not too much food. Your stomach at this stage can only hold about 4 ounces at a time, so you have to eat more often to get the nutrients in. And yes after about 3 hours I get the "hungry" feeling and I know it's time to eat again. The hard part for me is fitting in all the Water, but I'm making it work.

I eat according to my plan. It calls for 1/2 three times a day I don't really finish all of it and it is around 2-3 oz of meat depending on what type of meat it is, I can eat more beef than chicken for some reason. I can NEVER finish a whole scrambled egg either! It is so weird. :)

I mainy eat meat at mealtimes, but when I have Snacks, I have veggies or fruit. I can't seem to do Protein with veggie and or fruit, I get too full.

I think at 4 weeks I was doing about 1/4 c at a time. Hope this helps. Oh, I also am 11 weeks out as of MOnday!

I am 1 mos. and 1 day out. I can eat 1/2 cup of meat/protein (chicken breast, roasted pork shoulder, eggface ricotta bake with chicken added to it) PLUS some veggies.

I put my foods in 1/2 cup plastic containers.....i finish the veggies at my desk nibbling on them for apprx. 1/2 to 1 hr.

my day is like this-

7 am Protein shake, 9-10 am morning snack, 12:30 lunch, 3-ish afternoon snack, 6-ish dinner (dinner is my "lightest" meal)

I also get apprx. 80 oz. of fluids in

I too use small "baby" containers to bring to work. However no matter how hard I try, I still can't get enough Water in. That's amazing that u get 80oz in! For me, the amount of food I can take in, depends on what kind of food it is. When I have a turkey patty, I can only eat like a little more than half. But with soft fish, I can eat and eat! This whole new stomach is a learning process and I'm trying to understand it

I'm 5 weeks out and I had a Protein Bar for breakfast bcuz my tummy doesn't want to tolerate anything else when I first get up then I had a couple bites off a taco for lunch then for dinner we went out to a steak house and I had a lobster tail for dinner and a little later I had some of my hubby's rib eye left overs from dinner so I ended up getting in 84 grams of Protein And 811 calories! I haven't had any problems drinking or eating since surgery so I guess I'm lucky and I'm down 42 lbs!!!!! :)))

I know, a lot of people can't eat much that early out. Strangely, I kinda' felt disappointed that I wasn't experiencing some of the same problems other newly sleeved people were! (now I am thankful!)

I thought maybe my Dr. didn't make my sleeve small enough/right, lol. I've found out he did ;) dense protein/real food = restriction lol

From the beginning I was able to get all of my Water in, and pureed food just went right through me, between the diarrhea and lacking nutrients/+hunger I progressed myself to softer meats and foods faster and it was good for me. I've had zero issues mainly because I listen to my body/sleeve and with all of the knowledge I've gained here nothing came as a surprise! I guess I didn't have any swelling at all! As of today I am down 24 lbs. post op/ 40 lbs. w/pre op diet, and I feel GREAT!

I am about 7 weeks out. At 4 weeks I was still on mushies... which was still really mostly shakes since I developed a lactose intolorance -- so cottage cheese etc. was out. Right now I can eat about 2 oz. per meal and I eat three meals a day. Sometimes I only get about an once in. I cannot finish one egg. eggs seem to have this "appetite suppressant" type of effect. One or two bites and I can't eat for hours. So I avoid them. Most other Proteins I can eat about 1 to two oz. That's it. I can usually get a bite or two of a veggie but not if I eat all Protein first. I have to alternate a bit if I want veggies. Things look good but no place to put them :-) I hope this is useful.

How much can you eat? And how often?

lunch and dinner are usually 1/2 cup of dense Protein and 1/2 cup of vegetables. tonight it was 3.1 oz of shrimp (7 pcs), 1T cocktail sauce. 1/2 c. frozen chopped cooked broccoli with a melted laughing cow triangle thingy of cheese.

for lunch I had 5-6 oz. of grilled seasoned chicken breast with onions and swiss cheese. I ate about 2/3 then baggied up the rest and finished it for my afternoon snack. (this was 1/2 of a coworkers leftover sandwich (got rid of the grinder roll it came on) so that's why I am guessing on the measurement)

i usually have a shake for Breakfast, a mid morning snack (1/2 c CC or a string cheese stick) , lunch (above), an afternoon snack (yesterday it was 6 cherries, today nothing as I was full from lunch), and dinner (above). anywhere from 650-800 calories total. I use myfitnesspal.com to track my intake and work hard to make sure I get my Protein in plus high values of my vitamin/mineral needs. even thought I take Vitamins I feel it's best to actually work to eat nutritional stuff, plus I LOVE veggies.

I cannot imagine only getting in tablespoons or 1-2 oz. per meal.....that just doesn't sound like enough nutrition. I guess if you can do Protein drinks also but my dr. wants me eating my protein not drinking it. I feel like I get to eat a lot, am very satisfied with what I get to eat and haven't hurled yet ;) so me and my tummy are getting along quite well so far, lol.

I can eat about 2-3 ozs of dense Protein. Beef goes down pretty easy, but pork and chicken not so great. Although my dr does not want me drinking a Protein Shake, I do. I have a hard time tolerating meat now and am worried about my protein intake. I can drink Water and other beverages pretty easily, and don't have a problem meeting my Fluid intake.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
