According to my BMI (Body Mass Index) I should lose 20 to 30 pounds more. That's down around 165 lbs. Last time I was at that weight I was a teen riding my Schwinn with the balloon white wall tires,

listening to the Ray Charles on the transistor radio and trying to get a prom date. Frankly, I don't want get below 185 lbs., that's five more pounds to lose. The doctor says follow the BMI.

My two cents (opinion) says the BMI calculator is only a range tool, not an exact measurement for the entire population and it should not be the only determining factor.

The BMI should not be used as the only indicator in an overall fitness program.

What's your opinion concerning the Body Mass Index.

Take care & be well,

Lash

I agree, as does my surgeon, 100%. I've said it since before I had VSG. BMI can not take into account bone density/weight. Look at all the body builders that have 3-6% body fat, yet on the BMI they are classified as overweight.

My surgeon prefers to gauge overall health and fitness on the patient's body fat percentage over the BMI chart.

According to BMI charts, these men are all morbidly obese or super morbidly obese.

I'm guessing they have > 5% body fat, and probably closer to 2% - 4% (guessing).

Do you think they are accurate measurement tools? :)

Sorry Tiffykins, I didn't mean to duplicate you. I started responding, then had to step away, and didn't see your reply. :)

I agree, to a point. Even as a range its inaccurate. It fails to account for frame size and muscle mass.I have a large build. I often joke that I am built like a man. Most men can't get there fingers all the way around my wrist lol and I had many many x-rays and its all all bone...I was surprised At how little fat/bone I have in my wrist given its size. According to my BMI I am supposed to be 114-150 lbs, but anything lower than 150 and I would be a skeleton with skin. My doc said for me to aim for 150-160 lbs. *I* am aiming for 180. I was a very healthy size at that weight. Also, If I intend to be a very FIT woman I will also have alot of muscle mass, which weighs more than fat so I think 180 would be about right for me. Going by my BMI alone I would be at least 30 pounds overweight at 180 and that's just not correct for me and my body type.

The middle of my bmi puts me at around 120 lbs. The last time I was that size I wore 501 jeans ( 28,32). I can't imagine as a grown woman ( who has given birth) that I would ever be that size again, or be healthy at it. I will put my goal there because, I don't know what my shape should be now. I won't be afraid to change my goal if I find myself not looking lean, but gaunt.

And with that, I really don't need to say much more... Hahaa!! Anyway, I've said a million times that I'll never be in the healthy range according to my BMI. I really don't plan to lose more than 10 or 15 more Lbs at this point. If that keeps me in "overweight" ... oh well. I know I'm healthier today than I have ever been in my life and I can do more physically than folks 10 years younger than me!!!

I'm totally ok with that.

I agree with everyone else.

I want to lose another 20 lbs, but if I don't lose another pound, I would be fine where I am. I went from a 43.2 bmi to a 28.1 bmi.

I am 5ft 8 and really don't need to lose a lot more. If I got down to the crack-head weight those charts say I should be at, I would look horrible!!

Kelly :D

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
