How come I'm so nervous???

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm a newbie and I'm finally getting my surgery tomorrow. I thought I was ready and have been waiting for this day for so long. I'm not nervous so much about the operation or any of the unpleasant things afterwards during the post op stage. I am nervous that I am going to fail and fall off the wagon like I have always done in the past. I have always started a diet with the same motivation, dedication and determination then get bored or frustrated around the 3rd week and fall off the wagon. I want so bad to have this work but am really afraid that I will get sick of all the restrictions. I have read so many of these posts and most have helped and are so uplifting but the ones who have encountered all the problems with stalls, Protein supplement intolerance, etc. are really getting me down. Maybe I'm not as ready as I thought I was. Help!

Most everyone gets nervous and has the same concerns. I considered backing out completely a week or so before my surgery and even on the day of surgery I was ready to walk out.

Every body will react different. I have no food restrictions whatsoever. I eat what I want just in very small portions. I physically cannot get in more than what my sleeve can handle and you will quickly learn from discomfort when you have gone too far. I have Protein supplement intolerances. I cannot handle any supplements, I have tried several brands, I have tried hiding them in smoothies, pudding, Jello, my sleeve simply cannot handle it and I have done fine. Yes it is important to try them, especially in the first weeks when you are restricted on what you can eat BUT if you cannot handle it, you will be fine too. With stalls-it's just part of the program. Most people stall at 3 weeks, some later, some earlier, some for long periods of time, some for short periods of time, some don't experience stalls. The important thing is to not stress over the scale. It will move, just not always as quickly as we want.

Thanks Sas! Just finished the ol' Hibiclens shower and getting ready to walk out the door to begin this next part of my journey. Surgery is in 3 hours and I think I'll be ok. Thanks for your reply. You have done so well in your journey and that's a great inspiration to me. Thanks for paying it forward!

Wishing you all the best for your surgery and recovery! I hope you do really well with no complications. I was pretty much in the same boat as you. I had lost weight so many times but had never been able to keep it off. This time feels very different to me though. I am 14 weeks out and have lost 60 pounds. I have progressed to the point that I can try to eat any foods that I wish. I eat about 800 calories a day and struggle to get in 70 grams of Protein. I always eat my protein first and then a couple of bits of a vegetable or fruit. My "snacks" are string cheese, almonds (100 calorie packets), turkey Jerky, and frozen yogurt bars. I eat about 3/4 cup of food or about 5-6 ounces of dense protein and I am STUFFED. Like Thanksgiving full stuffed. I have no desire to eat for several hours. I have never felt this way before on any diet. I stop drinking fluids 15 minutes before I eat and then don't start them again for an hour after. I have read that this helps you to feel full longer. I go to a support group with about 30 other sleevers. It seems like some people don't lose as much weight as they would have liked but there is no one in the group who has gained any weight back. If the worst that happens is that I remain at my current weight I would be happy even though I am only half way to my goal. I am SO GLAD that I had this surgery

Hi, I'm pretty sure everyone was nervous before our surgery. For me I was ready to cancel the last few days before. I am so happy I didn't and you will be also. It is the best health decision I made. Of course their will be ups and downs and maybe regrets but you will fine and will work through it. If you have any questions or concerns, the people on this board can answer anything. I'm 8 months out and falling off the wagon is pretty hard with the sleeve. I will sometimes have an extra sweet I didn't need but I'm usually in control because the sleeve won't let me eat crazy the way I used too.

Good luck with the surgery, Janine

Thanks Marie. I had my surgery on Wednesday and I am home now! I'm pretty tired and have been really struggling to get in the fluids. Nothing really tastes that good at all and leaves a pretty uncomfortable feeling if you don't sip it just the right way. Regardless, I know this is only temporary and that the end will totally justify the means.

I am so grateful to have support out there like yourself.

Great job on your weight loss! Keep it up! BTW.... I love Michigan.... have spent every summer up there since I was born near South Haven or WhiteHall. Just love it!

There is no way to fail the sleeve unless you do something like eat Mcdonalds shakes 8 times a day and have Ice Cream on top it! You have made the decision to have major surgery and I and that is a huge hump to get over. Once you go through the coming weeks you will commit your mind to health. You will see you did not go through all this to put a bad thing in your mouth! I strongly suggest support groups, in person at the 2 to 4 week mark.

More than anything I believe your fears( we all had them in one form or another) is your subconscious expressing fear of change. You will do fine tomorrow and in the coming months!

Congrats!

Thanks so much for taking the time to respond! I am now on Day #3 Post Op and get to feeling a little better every day. I'm finding it very helpful to share experiences with everyone. I am looking forward to moving to the next stage in a couple of days and be proud that I have made it this far.

Thanks again for your kind words!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
