Post-op appointment today

Recommended Posts

I had my one week post-op appointment today. I got rid of the drain. It was strange because I have had this sore spot on my left side that has been bothering me at night. Today when the doctor removed my drain (from the right side mind you) I felt it immediately in my sore spot on my left side. I don't know if the drain actually reached over that far or if my nerve endings are misfiring but it sure felt good to get rid of it.

My doctor is pretty liberal with food and such. He let me move into soft foods today which was awesome. I made my husband take me to McCormick and Schmicks for some Sockeye Salmon (to die for!). I couldn't eat much but those few bites were delicious. He told me I could move to whatever I want next week but to still stay clear of doughy or dense bread and dense meats. I am glad he isn't one that makes you wait weeks before eating.

On the way home I realized how happy I am. Truly happy. I have not felt that about myself in a long time. My weight has always been the ball and chain that constrained me. Not any more!

Congratulations. I had my drain removed today as well. It is a great relief to have it out. Unlike you though I have another week on liquids before moving to pureed foods and then finally soft foods.

Having the drain removed was the weirdest thing! It hurt just for a second and then it was just weird.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
