Confused about this pre-op diet deal

Recommended Posts

I've seen many posts discussing the pre-op liquid diet that many of you have gone through or are going through. I admit to being in shock Friday when I was given my surgery date at my doctor's office and many things were probably mentioned to me, but I didn't grasp them? I do know that his nurse told me that I wasn't going to be required to do the pre-op liquid diet and I was all WOO HOOO because big girl would have DIED over strict liquids! Many of you suggest doing this to make sure the liver is healthy. Gah, so confused. I am on a Vitamin regime that I have been religious with for over a year that has Multi-Vitamin, Calcium, fish oil, vitamin E, B-12, and L-lysine. (I look like a very sick person when I pull all these out to take! LOL) So, I feel good about having been on Vitamins for over a year. What do you all think? Should I just take precautions and do the liquid diet for at least a week, if not longer? I just want to insure my success as much as I possily can! (Have I mentioned I have a high school senior who is getting her wisdom teeth out on the 1st compared to my surgery on the 16th AND all three of my kids start back to school on the 8th!! I do believe I'll be all looney before everything is said and done!)

it is to shrink your liver before surgery - my understanding is livers can be very fatty and get in the way during the surgery - harder for the surgeon to move out of the way and you DO NOT want you liver nicked!! I have heard some people say their doctor doesn't require it because they have already lost a lot of weight before surgery - my Dr seems to require it of everyone, my diet is very low fat for 2 weeks even though I have been doing weight watchers since March, losing 21 lbs already. So I would say if all liquids would bother you, still just be conscious of your fat intake during the time before your surgery.

Your liver likes to store carbs and sugar. I would recommend doing a low fat/low carb diet for at least a week. That way your liver will be depleted of its sugar stores and be nice and flat for surgery.

I'm with leslie! My DR. doesn't require any pre-op, but I don't want anything to keep me from my surgery date and time so fatty liver away. I have done 1 meal a day for 3 weeks. This is my very last week and I am requiring myself to stick to no carbs this week. Good Luck!

I did a liquid/lean and green diet for 2 weeks pre-op, as directed by my Dr. After the procedure, he commented how I must have stuck rigorously to the diet because my liver was so small and easy to work around. I did not want to risk any complications with this and it was a great start to the discipline I needed post-op. If you can't commit to changing your habits for a little while before your procedure, what makes you think you will have success after? Make the commitment and jump in with both legs. I'm down almost 40 lbs and it is great.

What you a meal... only one meal a day... that’s all you eat? I been doing the liquid diet for a week but this last weekend I fall out of the horse... big time I eat one day 2 small slice of cheese pizza n 2inches of a sandwich this was on Saturday. On Sunday I ate only one time but a regular meal no diet. Should I be worry? My surgery is next Monday 8/8/11... I had been pretty good overall... I all ready lost 16 pounds since my last visit with my Dr.

I always think that for some reason the colon should be clean too for surgery and that’s one of the reason to keep you in a liquid diet. I don't know if this has any effect on how good or bad the surgery could go post.

Any other recomendations on what to ask before surgery or help with the liquid diet I will apreciate a lot!!!!!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
