Anyone have the sleeve that has a thyroid problem?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I am about to get the sleeve soon. I have a thyroid problem and take levothyroxine daily to control my thyroid. I'm just wondering if anyone else was in my situation and how it may have affected them. I was told by my doctor as I start losing weight, I will have to adjust my mediction. I'm just nervous about it all.

My doc says he does a lot of patients that are hypothyroid. He did ask when my last TSH was and was it in the normal range. He said he didn't like to get into surgery with patients that were not on the correct doseage of synthroid (levothyroxine). He said if my TSH levels were normal then it was not a problem. My PCP will monitor my TSH after surgery to make sure I stay on the correct doseage.

What Khy said. My dosage has remained the same so far but my PCP is doing TSH every three months. She expects I will need a dosage reduction eventually.

Thanks for the info. That's what my doctor mentioned too. I was worried because I hear that people lose their hair with this surgery. Apparently when you lose weight if you are taking too high of a dosage of senthroid it causes Hair loss too. That's why I wondered if anyone had actually had that problem, My doctor said usually for every 50 pounds you lose your dosage should be adjusted.

My doctor did not say this, but just so you know, Calcium and Iron supplements must be taken at least 4 hours after taking your THYROID medication. Also with antacids. I just recently discovered that and now understand why I wasn't losing as much. I had been taking my Prilosec WITH MY THYROID PILL!!

Just did some searching, it looks like levothyroxine interferes with a lot more than just Iron, Calcium, and antacids... including birth control, antidepressants, and diabetes meds. Yikes!

What may interact with this medicine?

•amiodarone

•antacids

•anti-thyroid medicines

•calcium supplements

•carbamazepine

•cholestyramine

•colestipol

•digoxin

•female hormones, including contraceptive or birth control pills

•iron supplements

•ketamine

liquid nutrition products like Ensure

•medicines for colds and breathing difficulties

•medicines for diabetes

•medicines for mental depression

•medicines or herbals used to decrease weight or appetite

•phenobarbital or other barbiturate medications

•phenytoin

•prednisone or other corticosteroids

•rifabutin

•rifampin

•soy isoflavones

•sucralfate

•theophylline

•warfarin

HDub,

I hope all is going well for you. How are you doing?

Yes, a supplement schedule would be wonderful. I'm getting very confused about timing of all these things. I am going to make an appointment with a nutritionist to make sure I am doing all this right. I had my thyroid removed many years ago. Currently my levels are fine but they tend to fluxuate a bit from time to time. Also, I recently became low on Iron so Doc put me on an Iron supplement. I just started taking it this week. He didn't tell me to not take it with my synthroid, but I know I have to take synthroid on empty stomach and the Iron works better with a meal. I bought one of those big pill organizers that is for each day of the week and it has compartments for morning, noon, evening and bedtime, but what about with food, or without? Uhg!

I am doing better physically today but mentally I am worn. It is day 3. I had my drain removed and have been eating chicken broth, Gatorade, and some chamomile tea. Apple juice doesn't agree with nor does the tea. I feel better physically but I am exhausted. I have taken 2 naps already today. I feel drained. It is probably just recovering from the last few days.

Don't worry the exhaustion is normal. You have just been through surgery and your body is trying to heal itself with very little food intake so it has to get that energy from somewhere. I felt better right about the 1 week mark and have been feeling better and less tired every day since. I am 3 weeks out now and only notice I am feeling tired now when I don't get enough Protein for a couple days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
