Jenny A. 1 Posted July 25, 2011 I mean I REALLY hate the gym. I have tried to like the gym, but it's just not for me, even when I'm at a healthy weight. I've also tried those dance/zumba/jazzercise classes that the gyms offer, but I'm red faced, sweating and huffing and puffing 2 min into the warm-up; and I find myself staring at the clock, praying for the class to end. Same thing with the Yoga class the gym offered. Who knew holding a pose could be so HARD??!! What I'm saying is, I know I've got to exercise if I want to lose weight, even with the sleeve, but I will be darned if I can think of anything that I can do! Any suggestions? If it's high impact I can be sure I won't stick with it, but I love being outdoors--taking hikes, walks, swimming, going to the beach, etc. I was also thinking maybe trying karate or tai chi? Is there anyone else here who hates the gym/high impact aerobic exercise as much as I do, who found an exercise that worked for them??
KellyL 173 Posted July 25, 2011 I may decide to go to the Wellness Center later, mostly for the pool, but I pretty well hate the gym too. I love nature and walking but it's just too hot right now. So I am doing exercise videos and the Wii Just Dance 1 & 2, Country Dance, and Michael Jackson dance games. Right now my favorite exercise dvd is Turbo Jam. It's not too fast paced, low impact, and I like the music. I have Tae Bo but a little too fast and intense for me right now. I am going to be getting hip hop abs soon. I like saving $ on gas, and the a/c, and the convenience of exercising any time I want. Lol. I also have a Gazelle Glider, Ablounger, and someone just gave me a bowflex. Doing something you like is key to exercising.
Adri 40 Posted July 25, 2011 I hate the gym too. Ive tried wii zumba and just dance, but i think my weight around my middle just makes me too uncoordinated for all that be-bopping around . i like the biggest loser workout disc that came with my wii--they have a good variety of workouts and they do make you sweat. And I just bought a recumbant exercise bike...i figure i might be more likely to exercise if i can sit and listen to music while doing it!! we'll see...i just started my exercise regimen yesterday to try to get out of my stall. The only thing that keeps me going at the gym are the results. I meet people that seem to really like it, I do not think I will ever like working out at the gym. Since my surgery and I have started working out, ( light weights and cardio) I have seen great results. What I had to do so I would not get caught up in all the gym scene is I created my own exercise regimen. I only work out with light weights and do the treadmill and stair stepper/ski machines. I use resistance bands and have started sit ups as well. It seems kind of intimidating when I am working out with 40 to lbs and guys in the gym are lifting lbs or more. I am taking it real slow per my surgeons instructions. I think it is human nature, we are results oriented and we will continue as long as it works. I think ANY exercise is great after our surgeries. Is there anyone else here who hates the gym/high impact aerobic exercise as much as I do, who found an exercise that worked for them?? LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HATING THE GYM!!!!! i used to be a diehard bodybuilder many moons ago. . I went to the gym with the trainer 7 days a week for 3-4 hours EVERYDAY! I had no life . . . I did this for about 2 years or so then I stopped. . . I was pregnant and couldn't do that anymore. . . ok so after the kid life changes, i had different responsiblities and didn't go anymore. . . now i'm so gym burned out I hate it more then you probably do . . . I, like you, have tried to go back so often but i step foot into Golds and get instand nausea and the creepy crawlies in the pit of my stomach. . . i've even been approached by trainers to train again and represent the gym. . . NO THANK YOU!!!!! with the weight loss i have loose skin, but the body builder body is definately there still (amazing, thought that would go away with all the years) but i really realllllly, reeeeaaaaallllllyyyyyyy will not do the gym. . . I've bought a Wii and some zumba discs and work out at home. . . have hubbie jumping around with me with his little uncoordinated self, we laugh and have lots of fun. . . I do alot of yard work. . . and walk 20 - 30 minutes everyday. . . ( I have no choice cause work made us park about 1/4 mile away for a discount of $2.00 / day versus $12.00/day to park closer ) Good incentive huh? But the point is just find what you enjoy, and do that, if it's gardening, housework, yardwork, whatever, just stay active . . . no one ever said it had to be the gym or you'd fail. . . . good luck!!!! And thanks for listening to me gripe!
SmokyMtnGal2011 10 Posted July 26, 2011 HATE GOING TO THE GYM IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR ME!!!! All those skinny little butts working out - no legs rubbing together in their preppy little workout fashion statement accessorized gym clothes. GAG, PUKE, GIVE ME A BREAK. not to mention they look at large people as if they had a plague or communicable disease. NO GYM FOR ME!!!!! I have a treadmill, in the basement, and unless i walk by it (hardly ever go into the "Man Cave Basement area") no miles racked up by me. Lovey has a bow flex, again in the Man Cave Basement, won't see me cracking on that. I would like to get an XBox 360 Kinetic and some of the excercise games they have. Has anyone got one of them??? Are they worth the cost?? thanks for letting me vent.
kellyw74 258 Posted July 26, 2011 I don't like to go to the gym, but I like to walk, jog and use my fitness equipment at my house. Find what you like to do and do that. You don't have to belong to a gym to exercise. There are lots of things you can do without going to a gym. Good luck! Kelly

Linda121010 0 Posted August 7, 2011 I mean I REALLY hate the gym. I have tried to like the gym, but it's just not for me, even when I'm at a healthy weight. \ Me Too! I have a friend who recenttly went to school to become a PersonalTrainer. I otld her I will be her first client- and she has ONE job only -- to make me LIKE excercise! I only like to swim, and don't do it often because it is too much work to change, etc, and the community center is $6 every time-- it can add up. I used to like bike riding when I was much younger, so I may resurrect my neglected bike soon., So...I started walking in May with a friend - we mostly walk at the high school track so we can easily measure our distance and it has a softer surface to help our knees/backs. The only reason I "like" it is because she and I talk the whole time! And if she cancels, I don't go. We do 1-2-or 3 nights, depending on our schedule--but I figure even one time a week is better than zero. I started with the personal trainer 2x per week- Mondays and Thursdays at 7:00 a.m. Do I LIKE it? Not yet. But I do have a sense of accomplishment when I finish that hour. And in four sessions, I went from the 3 lb weights feeling "heavy" to being able to do the same move wiht 8 lb weights!!!! WIll I EVER like excercise????? The other good part is that we meet at her house, so I am not embarrassed at a gym. I am amazed at how many excercises I do not know how to do. These initial sessions have really been about learning some different moves. Apparently I am not all that coordinated - if I am going to remember to breathe, move a certian way, and count, I just cannot do it Oh--really wanted a Wii and made sure I got Wii fit at Christmas time-- I have NEVER touched it and don't even know how to operate it. My daughters will be showing me this when the cold weather comes again. But it is a bit embarrassing that I wanted it and had big plans and haven't used it yet. You are a bit ahead as you like to hike- are there new places you could visit-parks, etc in your area so you could at least vary your routine and your view? longer-life 139 Posted August 7, 2011 HATE GOING TO THE GYM IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT FOR ME!!!! All those skinny little butts working out - no legs rubbing together in their preppy little workout fashion statement accessorized gym clothes. Sadly I don't like exercising anywhere, so I understand hating gyms but do know that there are gyms that are not like this at all. I am about 100 pounds overweight and found a great place, with people of all sizes & ages that don't wear fancy workout clothes. I was never the heaviest and there were always people there at least 25 years my senior and they have a pool, tennis courts etc Despite all this, I cancelled my membership at the same time I quit Weight Watchers , but I will be back after I get sleeved. I am not trying to convince you though, just letting you know there other kinds of gyms as well.
