I cried at the supermarket today

I'm four days out and I feel great considering 85 percent of my stomach had been removed....anyway I'm not hungry but I began feeling dizzy. My nut allows creamed Soups, yogurt and the like after 3 days post op. So anyway I have been sucking down my Soups, low fat/sugar ice cream and yougurt with Protein powder and milk mixed in (although I did not strain chunks as they were so tiny I didn't think they would hurt but maybe I should stop this) So I started drinking down broth and it really made me feel better today. I went to the market with my husband and as we were walking around the store looking at labels of what I could or couldn't have I started to look at the sugar free fat free chocolate Syrup and my husband said "oh no no no you are going to waste all of that money" and I started crying like a big bluthering idiot. I kept thinking "omg how can I stand this another moment?" I am only out 4 days and I'm crying like a big baby....anyone else feel this way?

also: how much damage am I doing with the yoghurt/non strained Soup thing??? My doctor was not very explicit at all (matter of fact I kind of felt like I was on a conveyer belt the day of surgery!!!). Is the fat free/sugar free chocolate sauce a bad thing? I only put a squirt on my low fat/low sugar icecream and could only eat half a cup.....

also it's not taking me an hour to eat. I'm eating/drinking pretty quickly as of today. I have a system for drinking. No big gulps but continuous sips. I keep my mouth on the bottle and let it slowly drain into my mouth then slowly allow the liquid to slide down my throat. I have been getting in all 1.5 litres of Water and i feel so good and not dehydrated at all! :D

Your hormones are probably going a little crazy right now, not to mention the recent anesthesia. It will get better! Remind your husband how much you will be saving on future grocery bills and get what you need. Fluids and yogurt go down much easier than dense food so don't worry about that. I had a "no chuncks, no chewing rule" for the first two weeks after surgery. If It couldn't go through a strainer I couldn't eat it. I ate yogurt with fruit but always fished the fruit out. Follow your doctors orders, you don't want to hurt your new tummy. There are a lot of people on here that use the ff, sf syrups. I stay away from the artificial sweetners though personally. Watch your sugar with the ice cream this early out...my doc said keep it all under 10 grams sugar, 10 grams fat per serving. Good luck to you! You are allowed a few breakdowns :)

thanks holly. there is only 3 grams of sugar per serving in the ice cream and I only have it once a day. i have been really good about not having sugar intake. I know artificial sweetners are so so bad, but I have to have something right now. I plan to cut that all to a minimum as soon as I'm on a regular diet. I will have a no chunks no chew rule also. I have gone back to broth and will fish out the fruits. Thanks so much. My husband has been so supportive but he sometimes does the foot in mouth thing.....

I totally know what you mean about the husband and the "foot in the mouth" thing. The evening that I came home from the hospital I was sitting out on the patio with an 8 oz glass of Water and feeling very overwhelmed at the thought of trying to drink it all before bed time. My husband came out and sat with me and said, "wow, the enormity of what you have done just hit me." It took every bit of strength not to cry (in front of him), but I did cry. It sounds like you are doing good, and I promise it gets better with every day. I am so happy with my decision and my husband recently admitted that he is also. You're right, do what you can to get through the first couple of weeks. When you start eating real food you will start to feel much better. Take care and good luck!

I like making my chocolate Protein Shakes and sugar free puddings with Hood's calorie Countdown chocolate milk same amount of calories as skim milk and less sugar. Your body is still recovering from surgery so things can be a little wacky you'll feel better with each passing day.

Yes I think that your hormones are working overtime right now and you and your husband should except alot more of that for awhile....I will tell you I stayed on broth, sugar free popsicles, and Jello for the 1st couple of weeks...when you start getting HUNGRY inbetween meals then got to the cream soups and yogurts. I will just tell you that my doctor warned me about the hair loss issue and I thought I would be prepared but I so wasnt...a friend that had chemo treatments told me to do this and it worked wonders....get some ginger root from the grocery store and throw in the blender then rub in your scalp...it will tingle and this is good then wash hair as usual...you only have to leave it in for 5 minutes but I have left on for much longer with no problems. Stay away from anything that has alot of carbs but at first eat what you can and eating slow is one of the hardest things you will ever do or atleast it was for me. get out your most beautiful saucer and buy a baby fork and spoon...this will help you take smaller bites. The thing that helped me later on was using lots of herbs adn the n trying to taste each one with each bite. You won't eat like you used to ever again and I knew that going in, but I was ready to stop at whataburger on my way home from the hospital just because and the realization kicked in I'm not even hungry whats wrong with me...lol

MEN! My husband asked me 4 days out if I wanted a candy bar or MC D choc shake! I glared at him ( he is lucky to be alive you know) and he says What, one here of there cant hurt! I was like um hello, had my stomach cut out 4 days ago??????

You are over tired, adjusting to big changes and hormones go nuts right after surgery, it is totally normal to have crying jags! The good news is in a month you will be super high on your weight loss and laugh about this!

Ah...a big hug for you. I cried in front a an all you can eat buffet that first week thinking "I wil lnever be able to gorge again." This is part of your new process for a new you. Today, tomorrow, next week, next month and over the nextx year you will be learning about what you can do. Things are always changing, getting better. Slowly, you will regain ability to get more in easily. Understand this is the time for you to have a new relationship with food. Our minds need to adjust as much as our bodys will readjust.

Yes, overwhelming. Stay strong italian lady - your smiles will return soon.

Something that has helped me is baby food meat.

The chicken or turkey is what I like best. I am now able to eat some deli turkey but if I am caught out and I get hungry I just pull my spoon and little jar of baby food meat out of my purse. When we took my Mother-in-law and Grandchildren to McDonalds that is what I did. That small amount is enough to fill me up. I also keep a scoop of my chocolate Protein Powder in a little snack size zip lock bag. I put it in the shaker with no liquid and have that as a back up. You can get Water just about anywhere.

My husband thought he was to take on the role of "food police". I quickly set him straight on that. I told him that until he read all of the literature I was given from the Dr he was not to monitor my food choices. Which he had done in front of our friends who knew I had the surgery. Bad husband. :-( He is very supportive but carried it just a little too far. I don't think he will make that mistake again. LOL

This is all new to all of us including our husbands. I, like most of us, have always done a whole lot of cooking. For now I have quit and I am just getting used to my new stomach and taking care of my needs first for the first time. Eventually I will start cooking again for both of us but this time it will be healthy cooking for both of us. My husband supports me in all of this and he has backed off the food monitoring and he wants to get healthier himself. He only has about 10 pounds to lose.

Each day will get easier.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
