Why am I hungry all the time?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I'm new to this forum, so bare with me! I had my surgery on 6/20/11 and ever since I woke up from the anesthesia, I've been dealing with a constant grumbly seemingly hungry stomach! I understand that my stomach has changed and it's probably normal to be more aware of it's movement but, I feel like I need to eat all the time!!! Has anyone else noticed this? And what happened to the "not feeling hungry due to the lack of stomach hormone" situation? Help!

Ghrelin(hunger hormone) is also produced in other areas of the body besides the stomach, and it can take some time for it to flush out of your system. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that you'll lose all of your physical hunger. There are several members here that report they are still hungry post-op, but that small meals give them satiety.

If you are not on a PPI (Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, Prevacid), you might want to discuss getting on one with your doctor. Acid overproduction can cause false hunger pangs. I had it happen around 6-7 weeks post-op, and went on prilosec with 100% resolution of hunger.

Also, if you aren't eating more dense foods yet, then the thinned out, liquidy foods are going to go right through your stomach. So, you will experience hunger or that empty feeling.

Increase your clear fluids, avoid carbs, and talk to your surgeon about getting on a PPI.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
