Birth Control Before Surgery FEMALES ONLY!

Recommended Posts

I have been taking the birth control pill for years to treat PCOS and prevent pregnancy. I was at my psychiatrists office the other day and she said I would have to stop the BC pill one month prior to surgery which to me is insane? Because, if I stopped it I would have a horrible period and blood loss and I think thats more of a risk of clotting. I have no clotting risks I am in good shape ie well healthy BP 110/70 and my surgeon said BC would be no problem. What are your experiences?

I was not on BC before surgery - but I would go with what your surgeon says instead of the psychologist. The surgeon will be more knowledgeable about the after-effects of stopping medication than a "mental health" doctor.

Talk to your OBGYN and your surgeon. I have the copper IUD (no horomones) so that might be a way for you to prevent pregnancy but I'm not sure it will help with the heavy flow. TMI Maybe but the only negative side effect so far has been extra discharge (stringy/snotty) right after your period. My OBGYN said that it was where the string of the IUD rubs the mucuous membranes and causes them to create more mucus than normal. It's so not a big deal though.

Hi,

I second the paraguard (copper IUD) it has no hormones and is good for 10 years. I had one in 2003, then took it out to have my son in 2010, now its back in. I find that my periods are more regular and shorter.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
