Almost there!:heh: You didn't have to go on liquids for 7 days to shrink your liver? Makes me wonder even moreso about those Mexican Doctors...and I've done a lot of worrying in the past about their tactics. I wish you the best of luck, but am so glad I stayed here in the states and didn't go to Mexico. They seem to have no qualms about pre-testing of any sort or dieting...just hand over the money and you are done. This isn't sour grapes...I just think it is dangerous. God Bless, Dody
giblert 0 Posted July 10, 2006 Wow - sour grapes or what? My doctor here in Canada does not require a pre-op liquid diet to shrink your liver so please don't assume you know all about this surgery. There are different ways and for now, the jury is out on what is best. I for one think the expertise of the Mexican doctors is beyond reproach. God bless indeed. I think that this may depend on how much you weight or how large your liver is.. When I went in for my physical with the Dr. he felt my belly and said Your belly is soft with plenty of room. We don't have to worry about your liver. Also.. some Dr.'s like to see you make a commitment to the band, so they give you a number of pounds to lose before surgery to see how you do. My Dr. does this, a lot. Others may not.. Every Dr. is different, with different rules. Also, There are a few of the Mexican Dr.'s who have done over 3,000 band surgeries. And one of the Mexican Dr.'s teaches, worldwide, other Dr's all about the lapband and how it's done. One last thing.. this video, from one of the threads, shows a live lapband surgery done in Boston, last July. Around 38 min. into the video they talk very briefly about liquid diets before hand. They said some do it to shrink the liver, some have to have it for medical reasons for going under the anest., and some make you do it because the insurance requires you to lose weight prior to surgery. It's not word for word but here is the thread to the video. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3190472028990485080&q=lap+band
hootiebelle 0 Posted July 10, 2006 Yes the very experienced Mexican doctors make you go on a liquid liver shrinking diet IF your BMI is over 40 mine was for 14 days yours was 7 Dody ????....... :hungry: but having dinner the night before is not going to expand it overnight........My gosh woman think before you speak!!!!!!!!!:heh: As for pre testing they were very careful and did all the pre tests I needed...........They actually had a real hospital and electricity and clean Water..........and a nice car took me back to my 5 star hotel to recover not a donkey:p

My doctor only requires losing some weight (to shrink the lliver) if you weigh over 300 lbs. Different doctors - different patients - different requirements. Dody 0 Posted July 10, 2006 I'm being banded at one of the top 10 hospitals in the US. The shrinkage of the liver and the liquid diet are very important to this hospital, as it also has a big affect on the gas you get afterwards. To each their own. I don't even weight 250, let along 300 lbs. I'm having this done for medical reasons and because of arthritis and serious heart problems. I have about 50 lbs. to lose, but shrinking the liver has nothing to do with what I weigh. It is a precaution against several things....one of them being the horrible gas pains, as they have done a study on it at Vanderbilt which is a teaching hospital. My dr. has done over 1000 bands, and I'm merely following his advice. I was merely stating how very different things are in different places. I hated to think of you having all that gas after surgery that might come with having eaten up till about 12 hrs. before surgery. Sorry if I offended anyone. I was merely concerned.
