Taking all day to get protein drinks in

Recommended Posts

I'm a little over 4 weeks. I've been in the hospital every single week since surgery with random complications, so I am a bit behind in diet schedule. I've just started Protein shakes AGAIN 3 days ago and it is taking me all day to get 40grams of Protein in. I'm using GNC Wheybolic 60 Cookies and Cream. I really like it and so does my sleeve. I'm having to do an ounce an hour or I feel sick. In between I'm guzzling Water to make sure I get at least 50 oz of Fluid in. I know I am no where near where I should be, but I am doing the best I can.

Is it ok to space the shake out over a long time period? I keep it refrigerated and then pour some in my little cup to sip on. Do you think my body is absorbing enough during these hourly feeding sessions to be nutritionally beneficial? I'm getting in less than 200 calories, probably more like 100 calories per day. This worries me.

Thanks y'all.

PS My little Flintstone Vitamin makes my sleeve very nauseous. :( I can't seem to win for loosing.

I just can't do the Protein shakes. Have you tried powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth? 20 grams of Protein in 8 oz and tastes just like chicken broth. I was sleeved May 23, 2011. I find I can do the broth better twice a day than the shakes which are just too thick (I have tried several now) and even with Water, stuff added etc they just don't do well on my tummy. I am just now getting to 70 grams of protein some days. It does get better. And I find I do better to do all Water and then wait an hour and do broth or eat etc. Doing them back and forth I fill up faster and can't finish the broth. (I think I saw you are from near me - I live in Pass Christian had surg with Dr. Warden Surgical Specialists of La.)

as for the Vitamins....they started me on Bariatric Advantage...which worked well before surgery but after made me sick....now taking Vitamin Shop pineapple multi which doctor said had lots of great stuff in it....and it goes down fine (in the am better.....don't know why but in the afternoon not so well)

Well howdy neighbor :) I'm in Long Beach. My surgeon is Dr. Redmann @ SSL. I've tried the unjury but my sleeve does NOT like it. I'll be so glad to move to mushies. I think I will do better once I'm off these shakes. I'm on full liquids until I see Dr Redmann tomorrow morning. I'll be sure to check out those Vitamins. I'm desperate for something I can tolerate. I will do anything to stay out of the hospital! I do not want to deal with a Vitamin defiency on top of everything else.

I did the best on Isopure PLUS - the 8 oz bottles that have 15 grams of Protein. It is like Water in consistency - not thick at all. And, it is not strongly fruity tasting like some of the others. You might try this and just use it as your Fluid instead of Water. Or, mix it half and half with water and try it that way.

The chicken Soup Protein made me gag - although I drank regular chicken broth OK.

Sorry you are having some trouble getting everything in, but considering everything you have been through, I think you are doing great! I still struggle to get my fluids AND Protein in. I get close, but some days, MAN I get sick of thinking about counting Protein grams!!!biggrin.gif

I think you will have an easier time of it when you get on mushies, like you said. I hope so!

Good luck and let us know how you do. Oh, and girl, get those calories UP!!! You need them. If you are doing all SF stuff, try laying off that a while so you can get your calories up where they should be. Did your DR tell you how many calories you should be getting now since you have had all this trouble? I know it is hard though. Don't get down on yourself whatever you do. I know you are doing your best!!!smile.gif

I just learned a new trick .. I take a Isopure drink (one of the flavored ones, like apple/melon) and put them in little freeze-pops ... I make 8 pops out of 1 20oz jar which is 40g Protein. Then when ready, I can just have one at a time throughout the day -- and if I'm lucky enough to be able to get 8 pops in, that's 40g of protein right there ... even if I only get let's say 3 in a day, that's an additional 15 g of protein I can add into whatever else I'm doing. :-)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
