stomach or band slippage?

Recommended Posts

My husband had surgery on the 28th of June. Was doing fine until last Thursday(until this date he was totally satisfied with a fat free Jello or one egg for a meal). He started feeling very hungry, soft foods etc not at all satisfying for him. Today he ate a large avacado with salad shrimp and didn't have any problem with it. He thinks his band has slipped. Will be calling the doctor tomorrow but wanted to get anyone's opinion on this.

Thank you for any advice or experiences!

I thought the same thing when i was first banded(that my band had slipped because i was able to eat a little more than jello). I was advised by my doctor that i would know if my band slipped because i would throw up everything i put in my mouth ie Water, etc. so if he's not throwing up theres a good chance that the band has not slipped. Nevertheless, still followup with the physician for your peace of mind.

Sounds like his surgery swelling is going down. Almost EVERYONE has post-operative swelling and when it goes down the normal hunger level comes back. Most people can eat almost like they did pre-surgery until they get a fill (or two or three) and they get restriction. The band really doesn't start working until you get restriction.

Long story short - your husband sounds normal. In the good way! lol

I was banded June 20th. Swelling probably lasted about 10 days. Since then I FEEL like I could eat anything. Again, its normal, the surgery swelling has gone down and I'm just waiting around trying to be good, food wise until I get my first fill.

Your hubby is normal.

Terry :)

:think I had my first pureed meal on Friday. Afterwhich, I felt full and uncomfortable. After the fullness left I had a sharp pain in my front left side, ( I think in the stomache). I went back to liquids but no relief. Im still in pain whenever I move or bend or sit. Has this happened to anyone else?

Make sure he goes back on the doctor recommended diet asap. I was balled out by my surgeon as I had a piece of chicken in week 2. It is very important for him to follow the post op diet. I had a swallow, barium, test and it was fine. Good luck.

Kanda, your husband is fine. This is a VERY common occurrence as the post-op swelling goes down and healing progresses. Hunger returns, and that's a good sign that everything in there is normal.

Now he just has to hang on until his first fill, and try hard not to overdo it. This is called the "hardest part of banding" for a reason--people feel like nothing was done and they get frustrated. Just let him know that he should try his best to eat enough to satisfy his hunger, but no more. It's important tnat he continues to follow doctor's orders. Adjustment time will come soon enough, and then he'll be on his way!
