Watermelon

Recommended Posts

I am 3 1/2 weeks out from surgery. My instructions from Doc says soft fruits no skin permitted. You suppose that includes watermelon? I think I saw that people tend to have problems with it but I could not find it on here when I did a search. BTW- I bought seedless watermelon if that makes a difference.

I would think watermelon would be in that category. It mushes down to nothing and is a great source of fluids, too. I can eat an entire watermelon in a few days (of course I only eat the good middle partsmile.gif)

Be careful, though, if you watch carbs because I have heard watermelons are high in carbs.

I never get my fluids in by the end of the day, so watermelon is my evening 'treat' to help with that!

I love watermelon! It's my favorite fruit, sometimes it gives me diarrhea and sometimes it doesn't, so be aware that it might happen. One of my favorite ways to have watermelon is to make a slushy. I put watermelon in a blender along with ice, add a little lime juice (maybe 1 Tbs. or so) and some stevia to taste. I blend it up and drink it, it also counts towards your liquids for the day.:)

How would you eat it if your in the full liquid stage? We grew our own this year and hubby picked our first one last night. It will go bad before I get to the soft foods stage, so I want to eat a piece or our first one. Any ideas other than puree the juice?

Watermelon season runs from May to September, but peak is mid-June to late August, making them a perfect summer choice in the northern hemisphere.

There are several schools of thought on how to select a properly ripened melon, but I've always used the thumping method with great success. When thumped by flicking the middle finger off the thumb against the melon, the melon should produce a deep, rich thudding sound. The skin should be dull and slightly waxy (although many are waxed to shine), yielding only slightly to pressure, and the stem should be attached, brownish and dry. The round or oblong melon should be symmetrical without any flat sides, feeling heavy for its size. The underside where it lies on the ground should be a pale yellow color, not white or light green.

Melons will continue to ripen and soften a little at room temperature but not much. Melons picked before their prime will never develop full flavor. Whole watermelon should be stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Chilling injury occurs at temperatures below 40 degrees.

Thanks

I have eaten watermelon since 3 weeks post op and have no problems other than eating a bite or two too much early on and then it coming back up. It goes down really easily so take it slow, you can eat too much without feeling it until it is too late! Nothing terribly tragic if you do, just unpleasant but it comes up and is over very quickly.

Goiod luck and enjoy!

Hey if there's a moderator around, I am pretty sure marksmith is a spammer. :)

On topic, I love watermelon and am hoping to get to eat some post-op before they go out of season. :)

I have eaten watermelon a few times since surgery. It always makes me feel bloated and too full after one bite. Other melons I have not had a problem with.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
