OH NO< what's this about hair loss

Recommended Posts

OH MY GOODNESS... I've just heard about all this hair loss! Do we know why this happens, or if there is anything we can do to help minimise the effects? This is one side effect that I hadn't heard about ohmy.gif

Lots of suggestions out there (different threads) but mainly, I am told, any major surgery you experience results in Hair loss. I can attest to this. My hair loss has been BIG and I am 13 months out and at goal. I THINK, hopefully, it has slowed down but my hair is probably 1/2 the volume it was pre-surgery. Really! BUT 101 pounds lighter and that's okay with me!

Hair loss occurs due to the stresses on your body after surgery. Your body uses all the Protein it receives to keep your organs functioning. The hair is the lowest member of the food chain. Some people start taking a Vitamin called Biotin (aka Vitamin H) before surgery. This vitamin helps feed your hair, skin, and nails. Some people use Nioxin Shampoo, conditioner and scalp therapy to help stimulate the scalp and protect the hair follicles. I have five days before my surgery and are currently using both products to help combat hair loss. As many people say, the hair will come back, but the weight will not. It's a temporary condition.

Yikes, I think I'll be taking more Vitamin supplements and carry on stimulating my scalp... Must admit, I'd not heard about this before and now dreading it. If it's temporary though it's no real hardship, I can hardly be vain after walking around so overweight for such a long period of time.

Anesthesia/surgery, and more generically body trauma frequently cause your hair to fall out. With my lap-band surgery it started about 3 months post-op. A year later I had my gallbladder out and it started about 6 weeks out. I have thick hair so maybe I didn't notice as much, but it only seemed really bad for a week or two. I never thinned noticeably, but there were some mornings where I was completely shocked at how much hair was on my hands after shampooing.

I am dealing with Hair loss right now. I have tons of it falling out at an alarming rate. HOwever, i don't really notice it too much when looking at my head in full. The lady who cuts my hair said to not worry about it. She can already see lots of new hair coming in to replace it! There really isn't much to do to minimize it. People swear by Vitamins, but everyone's body is so different. It might work and it might not. Just be prepared for it if it does happen. This too shall pass and I am loosing weight still so I am happy!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
