What to eat

Recommended Posts

Hello All!

My surgery was on 10th June and my dietician tells me to start eating applesauce, soft eggs, canned fish and cottage cheese. I saw my surgeon today and he says I have not restrictions, eat what I can tolerate with an emphasis on Protein. I'm kinda confused because I'm still having strained Soups, broths, popsicles, and shakes. I haven't tried anything new since my first week post op. Please let me know when you all when back to regular foods and if it's too soon for me. I feel very protective of my sleeve and don't want to rush, but it's nice to know I can have whatever I want. My dietician also says I can't have Pasta or bread that's not toasted, but I've read somewhere that anything is ok in moderation.

Why not try some tuna or chicken salad? Or a soft-boiled egg, or canned peaches? No need to live on liquids when you've been cleared for food. Just take it slow, measure out 2 Tablespoons, eat what you can. Experiment! I wouldn't eat a pork chop or a steak at your stage, but some nice thin-sliced deli meat? Yes!

My surgery was June 20th, start of 4th week (22 days from surgery) and I'm on soft foods. Soft foods include, for me - refried Beans, cottage cheese, soft scrambled eggs, canned soft vegetables (non-fiberous), mashed potatoes, canned tuna or chicken with a little mayo, shaved deli meats, etc... I'm not allowed soft bread or Pasta for a while but I can have really really toasted bread or melba toast. Your doctor says you can be on a full diet (I'm not one ot argue with a doctor) but if you've only been on liquids up until this point, personally, I would take it slower then just jumping into full foods. I can be on full foods, according to my doctor's plan on the starting of my 7th week. Good luck!

There is such a big difference between post op diets and it is soooo frustrating! I had my surgery on June 23rd and on soft foods. I haven't had any problems with any foods that ive eaten. The only problem im having is the portion size. How much are we supposed to be eating 3-4 weeks out?

;) If your dr. has cleared you then by all means have something! You will feel so much more satisfied with solid food than with liquids anyway!

The more you experiment the more you will know what you can tolerate and what you can't. I was soooo scared of solid foods too, but I did fine with them. You will too!

Have a scrambled softly egg or some thin luch meat with laughing cow cheese spread on it!! YUMM. Try some thinned refried Beans or some ricotta bake from eggface. Wendy's chili is really good too. or just eat some cheese that is solid, but smooth. canned tuna is easy to go down and sits nicely.

experiment!!

Only speaking from the information my nutritionist gave me - starting on the 4th week (22 days out) we should be consuming no more than 3-4 oz. at a time. To be honest, that's even tough for me. I had 1/2 cup of refried Beans last night and I could only eat half of that. I'll scramble one egg and I can only eat about half of that as well. My worry is about not getting enough Protein in with normal food. I supplement my day with a Protein shot = 25 grams. I have found I can eat shaved smoked deli turkey, 2 oz., and that gives me 11 grams of protein (it'll depend on what type of deli meat you get. Also, apparently, you shouldn't try to consume more than 18-25 grams of protein in one sitting - your body can only absorb so much. I hope this helps a little.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
