Lack of concentration after banding?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm throwing out this question in the general discussion forum since I don't think asking it in the introductions forum (http://www.lapbandtalk.com/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=20713) was the best place for getting many replies.

Did you experience dizzy spells, weakness, fatigue, lack of concentration when you were newly banded? I ask since I will be starting a new job which will require my mind to be really sharp and on the ball just 2 or 3 weeks after my surgery; I'm concerned that being on liquids and mushies at this time will inhibit my concentration (not getting adequate nutrition). I am not on any special diet pre-banding. Would I be taking on too much at once by being banded and beginning a new job within weeks of each other?

Deana.

I being banded tomorrow, so I don't know by experience. However, my surgeon's office has a dietician and the after care diet is very specific about Protein and supplements. I doubt they would want you to be dizzy and such.

I'll let you know after my surgery. Best wishes on your new job!

Mary

Thanks Mary. I haven't been required to see a dietician and the doctor said I shouldn't need any Vitamins or supplements. I will try to use common sense on this and the excellent information that I've found on this website to guide me in what I need to be eating. Good luck to you tomorrow - mine is the day after!

Deana.

I am not banded yet, but want to let you know that you are doing the right thing. I also think the job will be a good idea because it will keep your mind off THE BAND. I also had the worry of feeling not quite right, but talked to my doctor about it and I was told as long as you get your Protein in You should be fine. If you feel light headed eat something and it will pass. I am a nursing student and will be starting back to school 3 weeks after surgery, so I know what you mean about needing to be able to concentrate, but I have been asured that I will do fine. I am glad you found this board, and if you need anything just ask.

Good luck!!!

jenMomTo3, thanks for your reassurance. I'll try to compile a list of soft stuff that's high in Protein that I can eat at the office in case I start feeling light-headed. It won't be as simple as just popping a granola bar into my bag:rolleyes:!

Hi Deana, I had dizzy spells and weakness, and even busted my ass on my third day at work because I got dizzy and fell (you should see the size of that bruise!). I also started a new job 5 days after being banded.

I felt SO MUCH BETTER when I got some more calories in. I know that kind of goes against the whole theory of losing weight at the front, but my health was a bigger concern at that point. I ate refried Beans, blended beef vegetable Soup until it was pureed, blended scrambled eggs, etc. and I felt so much better. I called my MD first and told him why I wanted to do it, and he whole heartedly agreed that it was important for me to do so. He only emphasized that I blend whatever I took in as thin as I could.

Hope that helps. Call you Doc and talk to him/her if you get dizzy, etc.

Based on my experience with zillions of diets....................my experience has been that if you aren't getting a good balance of Protein and carbs you are at risk for brain fog type of stuff. When you are on your shakes, IMHO, if you make sure you are getting some carbs in as well as protein you should be fine. I don't think the band alone causes lack of concentration. ANd after 2-3 weeks you will more than likely be well adjusted to whichever shake you will be using and/or the foods your doc allows you to have.

If you are keeping well nourished, I think you will be fine. Just be sure to get plenty of Protein - you know, brain food. A new job isn't necessarily bad. You won't have time to think about food so much. If you find yourself feeling bad, call your doctor and tell him what's going on. He/she may let you have some more protein-rich foods sooner than normal - like blended chicken noodle Soup.< /p>

Good luck. Let us know how it is going.

Warmmorningsun, this was what I was fearing, and I think that I will carry around some high Protein ready-to-use drink or equivalent to drink if I start feeling weak.

Tztmama and Stitchy, I haven't been told to stock up on any shakes, just to drink broth and other Clear Liquids and runny Soups for 2 weeks, then slightly thicker Soups, plus soft fruits (peaches, bananas etc) for the next 2 weeks, then after 4 weeks, start slowly introducing solids (chicken, fish...). I think that I'll try to make the most nutritious soups possible with everything in them (meat, veg, potatoes) and then blend them to the right consistency so that I'm getting the nutrition I need. Stitchy, I liked your suggestion over on my other thread about blending any foods with milk to make them runny enough. At least that way I'd know that I was getting all the right nutrients.

I find that if I don't get adequate nutrition, then I don't feel well, period, pre-band, and post-band. I always make sure I get a bare minimum of 900 calories in a day, preferably between 1200-1500 calories a day. That I get at least 80 grams of protien. That I take a chewable Multivitamin, chewable Calcium, and sublingual B12 Vitamin (melts in your mouth). I use fitday.com to track my intake. I also use ISOWhey Breezer brand protien powder, it comes in great fruit flavours, and mixes in Water or low-cal juice, it doesn't thicken fluids at all. It's pure whey protien. I particularly needed it when I was on pureed foods, since I had a protien shake diet supplied by the Dr. for the liquid part of the post-op diet, but when it came to the pureed/mushie stage I was on my own with protien supplementation. You can also buy whey protien unflavored, and if you add it to vegetable Soups or broth, it will give you the protien you need. Check the supplement aisle of a large grocery store, or for more selection try a vitamin/supplement speciality store. You'll do great! Congratulations on your upcoming banding and on your new job!

I never had any issues with continued dizziness or anything. I could tell when I was not getting enough fluids in, and was dehydrated, I would get very lethargic, and grouchy!! I used Zero carb Isopure drinks 40g. Protein in each bottle, I would try to drink half in the morning and half in the afternoon. I bought them at GNC, they are good for while you need Clear Liquids the first while following surgery, before you can do the shakes. I also ordered the unflavored Unjury powder, 20 g. per scoop, and used it in broth, even mixed it up in my jello...you can use it in anything to boost your protein.(www.unjury.com) I also take a chewable Vitamin, and the viactiv calcium chews.

As for the new job...it sounds to me like perfect timing! It will keep your mind occupied, giving you less time to think of food!! Plus you mentioned worrying about not eating in the cafeteria...from the begining, you can be eating healthy around these new people, and then as you lose weight, they will attribute it to that...nothing else. They have not seen you go up and down in weight...they will see you eating your container of yogurt, or a salad, and as your weight drops...it won't raise questions. Or at least it wouldn't in my mind. Sounds ideal...Good Luck on the surgery, I am thrilled with mine, wish I had done it years ago!!! And good luck in the new job...sounds like you have a whole new life to look forward to!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
