Can we swallow capsules??

Recommended Posts

So for those of you who read my post about possible infection... it was not an issue with my incision being infected. I went in today and he said that one of my stitches did not absorb and sometimes you can have a reaction to it... (or something to that effect) and that is what happen......... he said Im too far out to have incisions infected unless something crazy happens. Anyways.. he prescribed me an antibiotic for 7 days and told me to cut it in 2 and swallow. I think he didnt realize that it is in capsule form :/

Can we swallow capsules? or do i need to open it up and swallow that nasty crap inside... which i did once today and almost gagged to death from the taste... also.. washing it down was not easy. it was stuck on my tongue and roof of my mouth and i had to drink quite a bit of Water to get it down .. which didnt feel good on my tummy.. anyways lol

Can anyone assist?

P.S. Thanks :)

I've heard some people take the powder from the capsules and dissolve it in a little one ounce shot of Jello then let the Jello set and take it as a jello shot. I don't know if that would work for you or not, but it's one idea. That sucks that it tastes so gross :(

This is only slightly related to the post, but I have a tiny bump on one of my incisions that looks kind of like a pimple, only without the pimply stuff inside of it. It's been itching, so today I decided to give it a closer look. I noticed that it felt like something scratchy was barely poking out of it, but it didn't look like anything was sticking out. I used a pair of tweezers on it to pull at the invisible scratchy thing and it turned out to be a piece of clear, unabsorbed stitch! No more itching. :)

I'm glad that it's gone because it's been causing that incision to heal more poorly than the rest. That scar is visibly raised while the others are much more flat. I started with Scar Away Patches today to hopefully get them to fade a bit. /CSB

Oh, and to answer the question about capsules... my doctor had me take them apart for the first two weeks and mix the insides in a little applesauce or yogurt. Now I can swallow them just fine so I swallow them.

I am farther out than you, but I had to take antibiotics about three months out for a sinus infection, my doc said they would be round pills, but when I got them back from the pharmecy, they were capsules. I wasn't going to take them, but tried and I was able to swallow them and got along with them fine.

Hope you get through this ok.

Mindy

I was taking big ole honkin' antibiotics orally(3 different tablets to be exact) at around 6-7weeks out without issue, along with a Prilosec capsule (which is time-released). I was cleared for all pills, capsules, meds at 6 weeks out.

Try mixing with grape juice. I had to crush a pill yesterday and then mixed it with the grape juice. I couldn't taste the pill. I was doing kind of the same thing with my liquid pain and nausea medicine when I was still on them. I would drink a little of the medicine. Then I would swish grape juice around in my mouth and then swallow. Grape juice has such a strong flavor that it really covers up some of the nasty stuff we have to take right now. Good luck!

I was told by my surgeon's office that I was no longer able to take capsules of any kind, for any reason! Which kinda pissed me off, because my insurance will ONLY cover Prilosec in capsule form, so I've been having to buy the tables OTC for mucho $$... I guess it's just one more thing that varies between surgeons.... bummer for me...

I hope you end up getting your medicine somehow and I hope and pray it isn't too nasty! That sucks so bad :(

Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
