Is it an Upper GI or...

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I have been going to all my pre-op appointments and have a question. My surgeon is sending me to a gastroenterologist, and he did tell me that they are going to do a test. Now I forget if he wants me to have an upper GI or an Upper Endoscopy. I will of course call the office and double check again. My insurance company doesn't require referrals, so I don't have anything written down. I was just wondering which one it was. Thanks!!

It's an upper endoscopy. they are checking for certain bacteria in your stomach. Mine was last friday, no worries, Just found out that I do have the H-pylori bacteria, and will have to do two weeks of antibiotics to get rid of it.

Good Luck.

I just called the office because I had another question and asked about this. The secretary told me Upper GI. Can they tell if you have the P-Pylori bacteria or ulcers or hernia with an Upper GI? I remember the doctor telling me that they were looking for hernia or ulcers. I am thinking the GI doc would know what he wants?

Interesting, mine was a endoscop. I'm sure that they can tell about the bacteria no matter what they do. good luck

I had to have both done! The endoscopy was first and looks at you esophagus all the way to the top of your stomach. Looks for hernias, reflux and can test for HPlori bacteria.

The Upper GI was to look closer at what they endoscopy found and looks at how you swallow and how your esophagus works.

Kelly :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
