Help...calories, fat, carbs and protein???

Recommended Posts

Hi I am 32 days post op and confused! I don't know at this stage of the game how many calories, fat and carbs I should be taking in. My biggest confusion is carbs there are simple and complex and I don't know which is which! Cam someone help explain this as well as give some advise on what I should limit myself to daily on the carbs in order to get the greatest success out of my sleeve?

Sorry - I didn't see this post. I was gone for the weekend and it was really busy out on this site!

You may not have had a lot of answers, simply because there are so many opinions. Some doctors and nuts say, just to get in your Protein & let the rest take care of itself. Other's have very strict rules about calories, carbs, types of Protein, etc. some say a carb is a carb ... others swear you can subtract the Fiber and sugar alcohols ... others say complex carbs are ok, but not simple.

What is your doctor's plan? How are you doing with it? Maybe we can make some suggestions based on what you are doing & the results you are looking for.

Sorry ... I know that isn't much help. But, it seems like there are as many plans as there are individuals. Everyone seems to be a bit different on what works for them.

Thanks for your response. Yes you are correct there are a lot of different opinions out there. My surgery was June 8th and so far I have lost 25 lbs I did not have to do a pre-op diet so all lost is post op. Currently I take in anywhere from 400-600 calories and 50-60 grams of Protein on my lucky days! I have had a really hard time finding a protein supplement that I can stomach! I'm trying different Protein Bars and stuff now and can tolerate those better but they seem to have a lot of carbs and sugar. So that's were I get confused, should I even be worrying about the carbs when the protein benefit is so high? My surgeon didn't really offer any suggestions at my 2 week post op since at that point I was only on full liquids. I don't see him again for a couple more weeks so I figured I would try for some advice on here. I just don't want to mess this up! I feel like a slow loser but I know I shouldn't be compareing myself to others.

My surgeon says 600-800 calories during the losing stage and at least 60 gms of Protein, but I could not fit all that in until about 8 weeks out. I am low-carbing of my own volition, so no more than 30 carbs/day for me, although I read here about people losing just fine eating carbs. I count all carbs, simple, complex, Fiber, sugar alcohols, all of them. I am naturally a meat-lover, was before surgery and I am now, so low-carb is easy for me.

My first month I lost 22 lbs. I think you're doing fine.

Sorry I missed the post too. I mostly focus on 70-80 or sometimes more on Protein and by the time i get that in i really have no room for many carbs so it makes it easy to also do low carb as well. Some days i have a bit higher carbs if i do a Protein Bar cuz of the sugar alcohols, but i don't have one everyday so i don't worry about it.

I want my eating to be more natural and not so much a "diet". I try to stay away from the dieting mentality, cuz if i make things completely off limits, i just crave it even more which could in the old days lead to binges. I do know about how many calories I end up with cuz i use myfitnesspal to keep up with my protein and it gives me the cal/carb count as well.

:)

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
