walking soon after surgery

Recommended Posts

I walked about half a mile yesterday without any problem but I took a small break half way. This morning I didn't take a break and had to vomit on the way back. There was nothing to come out so I just stood there heaving. I made it back home ok but it was bad for a minute.

Wow, that is pretty far just being a few days out from surgery. But good for you. I hope I can do that after my surgery next week.

How is everything else going?

Just had my surgery on the 7th and I am not trying to walk that far yet. I did, however, get up and walk every chance I got through the halls at the hospital and today at home, I am starting to feel back to normal. I walked at the hospital every time I couldn't sleep, 3:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m., etc. I figured if I couldn't sleep I might as well walk. My husband even commented on Saturday through the halls at the hospital before I came home that I needed to slow down and that I was walking at a pretty good pace.

I will comment, however, that I was one of the lucky ones and didn't have hardly any pain....just a feeling of soreness (like I had done 1,000 ab crunches) so I didn't need to take all the pain medicines.

Glad to be on the losers bench!

Dawn

I think walking soon after surgery is good. My doctor had me up outta bed within hours of it being done, and I had to walk the halls at least every 2 hours. I couldn't sleep much anyway. I went back to work a week later and while I was slightly sore in my abdomen, I was noticing an increase in energy already!

I had mine on the 7th and like Dawn, I was up every couple of hours cruising the 'block' . My routine became, wake up, drink, put on my socks, go potty, brush my teeth, walk two or three times around and head back to bed. The nurses all encouraged me and I was going pretty quick by the second day. Don't let the time of day bother you, if you are up, try to walk around a bit. I havent been trying any long excursions yet but have been pacing around the house a lot. Heaving was something I would prefer to NEVER do again so I think I am going to avoid pushing myself too hard in the beginning. Give those staples time to do their job. :)

I was sleeved June 16 and the week before the surgery I was walking 3 miles, now I can't seem to get passsed a mile and a half. I almost have a car sick feeling. I think it is very strange but I try it every day, I first thought it was the heat from walking at an outdoor track but the same thing happens in my cool basement on the treadmill.

I walked a lot of halls at the hospital until I was released. Once home I walked at costco and the local mall since the weather outside was cold and rainy. I was released to go back to my "normal" 30 minutes on the treadmill two weeks after surgery. I had no problems.
