I was wondering if there was anyone out there who had gout before surgery and wondering if the surgery helped them with gout or did it just stay the same? Thank you in advance. Gout is a form of artritis that is really painful. Would be totally relieved if it went away I really hope it does.:)

I had an episode 1 week before surgery! I had another episode a few weeks after surgery which was probably because of rapid weight loss. I have gone a few months without an episode. I have been taking black (tart) cherry extract to ward them off.

I don't have gout, but take allopurinol for kidney stones, so maybe that is why I've not had any gout issues. Anyhow, from what I've read, weight loss does help gout because it reduces the amount of uric acid that can be stored in the fat cells, as the fat cells are reduced, the acid is reduced, however, rapid weight loss (more than 1 or 2 pounds per week) could actually make the flare ups worse because the acid would be released too quickly for the kidneys to process it. It should even out once the weight is gone.

I have gout as well and currently take Allopurinol to try to keep it under control but still get the occaisonal horrible attack. I've been told that the high Protein intake during pre-op and for awhile post - op can actually trigger attacks. Especially since you can't really take any meds for a little while. Plus when you are immobile in the hospital and resting afterwards.....easy for crystals to start settling in your joints with inactivity. Walk when you can!

I'm not looking forward to that. However, thinking LONG TERM I think it can only get better since you will have less weight affecting joints and eating less. Many food that can trigger gout (beer, soda, rich fatty foods, etc) are very limited as well if not outright forbidden....so that helps too.

Hopefully we both get some relief after surgery eh?? Good luck!

I never thought of the high Protein diet actually triggering an attack. That sucks lol I am very careful to watch what I eat so I don't have an attack. I hope the surgery helps both of us! and Good luck to you as well :)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
