Band to Sleeve - 10 days post op

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I am currently 10 days post op from my surgery and I have to say I am already sooooo happy I did this. I was very successful with the band for 2 years and then started to have some complications. I had a slip and esophogal dialation. So that is when I started to consider a revision. So going into this surgery was much more stressful - the pre op diet sucked, I was much more nervous and stressed . But it all went very well and I do not regret a thing. My recovery was about the same as the band but I do feel like I am losing more right away.

As a side note - When they removed the band they found the tube had embedded itself into the middle of my liver and was literally cutting through it. The also said my liver was starting to grow around it. Crazy! So anyways I guess not life threatening but scary, very happy it is out.

Pre Lap Band: 255

Post Lap Band: 210

Pre Sleeve: 223

10 days Post Op: 208

I feel great although still on liquids 4 more days. I cannot wait for mushies! But so far so good. :)

Hello. I'm a new to this as well. I also had the band for about two years and it eroded into my stomack and had to be removed. I'm considering the sleeve and I have a apt with a surgen on Aug the 8th. I'm very nervous about this. Not knowing the long term affects is kinda scary. Have you had any bad side effects as of yet? Was the recovery very long? Thanks Tye

So glad you are doing so well! I am new to the sleeve forum. I have had a band for three years. I finished all the tests for a revision to a sleeve and now awaiting approval from insurance. Did you have the band removed and the sleeve in one surgery?

I had the band removed and sleeve done all in one surgery 6/23/11. It's been a little over 2 weeks and I have lost 22lbs. Had the same issues with my band, slipped on me and left behind a lot of bad scar tissue. Went to Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. Experience was awesome, hospital was cleaner than any one I have ever been too. I received great care. Dr. Aceves removed all the bad scar tissue that the band left behind.

I am so glad to see you are doing great too!!!

So happy that your band is gone!!! Double happy that you are doing well inrecovery!

It's a tough journey for anyone to have a sleeve, but I think those of us that have had revision have a unique emotional journey to navigate. It's hard to go through one failed WLS and summon up the courage and hope to have a second.

Really happy for you and happy that they got the band out before it did any further damage. I had scar tissue on my liver, but nothing as drastic as yours.

Wishing you an uneventful recovery :-)

Thanks everyone! I had the removal and revision in one surgery and frankly don't know if I would have had the guts to go back and do two surgeries. I have the MOST amazing doctor in Orange County and it was because they kept me so informed that I was even as comfortable as I was.

The second time around was for sure much more difficult emotionally and maybe even physically. Although I think the recovered as quickly as the band, I think the emotions of going into a second surgery and the pre-post op diets were very difficult for me. In addition, I am single and dating and it was hard to not date (because I cant eat) or explain that I had surgery to someone without really telling them what it was.

So today I officially start mushy foods and really tried some small things over the weekend and so far so good. I started my morning with an egg and it was seriously the best egg ever! I have no discomfort but definitely am full after 4 bites. I am finding that I am hungry every 2-3 hours and cannot really eat around traditional meal periods. I am an official grazer! But I dont care. I would rather graze then have another protien shake which I literally have to gag down at this point. I am not a sweet person (totally a salt girl) so the shakes were like personal torture.

I'm glad all of you have done so well....your posts encourage me. I live near Houston. Dr Garth Davis will be doing my revision. I have a lot of scar tissue. I can feel it around my port and band. I just hope he can do it in one surgery. Now I just need approval.

Hi. I am a band to sleever aslo. I am a month out. I feel like I can eat quite a bit but my doc said he did have to leave me a bit larger at the top from my band scaring. Anyhoo...I saw that you said you don't like sweet shakes...have you tried Isopure? I hate a few of the flavors and there can be a bit of an aftertaste but I really like the Alpine Punch over ice. It might be worth a try if you're having a hard time with the shakes. :)

Just a little tip with the aftertastes of Protein shakes... I have the Listerine breath strips. Takes right care of that before it even hits. ;)

Glad to hear recovery is going great Anne ! ! ! The sleeve is the best decision I ever made. Getting the band out was the band damn thing I could have ever done, and I also had the issue of my body growing around the tubing and port from the band. It was insane the amounts of scar tissue that I had after the band. Luckily, it didn't grow into my organs.

Best wishes on your continued journey ! ! !

Congratulations, Anne! I had my band to sleeve revision surgery on June 30 and I'm amazed to read about how many people have had issues with scar tissue! My surgery was supposed to be two hours, but ended up being five hours because of the amount of scar tissue that I had in my abdomen! I had no idea that this was a common problem! I also had problems with a dilated Lap-band "pouch" and ulcers. I'm so glad to hear that everyone is doing so well with the sleeve!

I was at the doctor on June 23 for my final pre-op appointment, and since then I have lost about 12.5 lbs. Definitely very happy with this decision. :-)

Hi Charlene, I am in the revision process. My band is still in place. I actually just had the EGD done yesterday - insurance co requires one for removal. My surgeon told me yesterday that he requires 6 - 8 weeks between procedures. I'm very glad to hear he requires time between, but kinda wish it wasn't to slong of a time. :)

So glad you are doing so well! I am new to the sleeve forum. I have had a band for three years. I finished all the tests for a revision to a sleeve and now awaiting approval from insurance. Did you have the band removed and the sleeve in one surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
