My insurance approved my sleeve!! Super Nervous!

Recommended Posts

My insurance approved my sleeve today! Nothing like cutting it close, my surgery is scheduled for July 13th. I'm still freaking out. Can't help but be nervous. But I do have a question, those of you who have had your sleeves awhile, do you still worry about getting a leak? or is it only in the first few weeks? Does the stomach heal over? I've tried researching this but have not found to much. Thanks for the input! Hopefully I will be on that loser's bench real soon!! :)

They will check you for leaks at the hospital, follow your doctors orders when you get home.... Absolutely nothing to worry about.

Congrats on being approved! They do test for leaks in the hospital- right after is when the chance of having a leak is higher. But after that you are pretty much safe as long as you follow your doctor's rules. Good luck to you on the 13th!

Congrats!!

They check for leaks during the surgery, but you can always develop one later... usually during the first 3 months post-op, but occasionally it happens during the 3-6 month range... There have been a couple of people on here like that...but they speculate that such leaks were already present earlier on and that they went undiagnosed... I'm not trying to scare you... like i said, they are very rare... This surgery is so worth it!!! If you follow the eating plan from your doctor, you will be fine!!

And yes... scar tissue will develop over the staple line in time and that creates a protective barrier that strengthens the seal of the new stomach.

I don't regret getting this surgery!! Best (and scariest) decision of my life!!! biggrin.gif

Awesome. Good luck to you. I had my surgery last July 13th (I consider 13 to be my new lucky number) and I have lost just about 120 pounds. You are going to love your sleeve.

My understanding is that you only have to worry about leaks in the first few weeks after surgery while the new stomach is healing. My doctor advised me that by eating something too soon, it could cause vomitting and the spasming involved in that could cause a leak. That scared the bejeeezus out of me and was enough to keep me on the straight and narrow as far as following doctor's orders.

As I approach the first anniversary of my surgery this week, I am thrilled with the results and I honestly feel it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Good luck!

Brian

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
