Are any of you guys on Wellbutrin? I'm not, but I think I want to be. I want to go to a doctor... and I want to ask for Wellbutrin. (for my mental health as well as to quit smoking, because I believe Zyban and Wellbutrin are the same thing)

Anyone? Feel free to PM if you don't want to say it here, and if you can help me out.

I also need some help in how I'm going to approach the doctor with this. I've 'wanted help' for a really long time, and the one time I got up the nerve and asked, I was brushed off, and got nothing at all. :think

Keep in mind, I will be having to go to a walk-in clinic, and see a doctor who's never seen me, and likely won't ever again, or at least won't be considered my regular doctor.

Argon, I would like to answer your inquiry. I am on Wellbutrin XL300mg for reasons of depression, hereditary in my family. This drug is also marketed as Zyban and has been useful for those individuals wishing to quit smoking. I've got to come clean now about my own dirty habits; I've been smoking since I was 19 years old and am deeply addicted. (Please note my age at the top right of this post.)

Though I haven't managed to quit smoking I think that you should give this drug a shot. It has worked for many people and it has helped me to cut down on my smoking habit. It is also an anti-depressant that does not ruin one's sex drive nor cause one to gain weight. I have a Big depression problem and I am on other medications that have these side effects.

My advice to you would be to try Zyban/Wellbutrin. If you don't like it, you can quit it. Aunty green says, "go for it and good luck, kiddo."

Thanks green

Something I'm curious about, is the actual size of the pills, cause I'm worried that since they are not supposed to be broken, I wouldn't be able to swallow them. (I have to break in half tylenol tablets, and they still get stuck.. even tried biting it in thirds last night, and same problem) Have you ever been on the Wellbutrin SR? Is that any smaller? I would rather take 3 pills a day than one huge one once, and deal with that discomfort for half an hour. But then again, if the SR's are almost the same size and can't be broken either... I'm screwed. I don't even know if SR's exist anymore anyways...

I actually tried Zyban a few years ago, and although I stopped taking it after a few weeks, (cause it didn't feel like it was helping), I quit(smoking) a week before quitting Zyban, and stayed quit for a couple years after that. Not sure why I started again... I went home for Xmas one year, stole one from my mom, and then it began.

Not that I should be shopping for anti-depressants based on their size, or if I can break them, etc, but do you know of any kinds that may be easier to take? It would be nice to have the benefit of helping me quit smoking and being a anti-depressant all in one, though.

Hmm...

Mandi, I know several people who have quit smoking on Zyban. As far as depression, I have some close family members that deal with clinical depression and sometimes you may have to try different medications to find out which one works best for you. I do know that some medications such as Paxil and Effexor can be difficult to come off of (A fact not always divulged)

Good luck and let us know how you make out

Morn'n Mandi,

I havent smoked in 20 years, so I don't know about that. I do however take effexor xr for depression, started last Sept. Works great, but not looking forward to going off it. But I'm not quite ready to try yet.:D

The WellbutrinSR pills are bigger than the XL pills but you can crush them. I had some that were left over and was crushing them during the first week after the band was installed. I also take Celexa for depression. The pill is small and can be crushed. It doesn't help you quit smoking, though.

Thanks everyone who's commented so far. :D

Green, do you know if you can still get Wellbutrin SR? What are you going to do, if you can't swallow the ones you're taking now at some point?

I know, I know... it's my dirty secret. I'm so good, Dan didn't even know for quite a while.

I haven't smoked in 14 years. I am the worst ex-smoker you will every meet. I can't stand being around it anymore, it makes me wheeze. I'll tell you how I quit. I had quit several times but always went back to it for whatever reason I gave myself that day. This one day I was just about to light up a cigarette but before I lit up I took my two inhalers out that I needed if I was to smoke. A light bulb moment as Oprah would put it. I didn't light up and never did again. It's one of the hardest things I've ever done, the hardest obviously is dieting, but I'm so glad I quit.

Good luck with your battle it's not an easy one!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
