Post-Op Food

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I was banded on June 30 (a week ago now). I've mostly gone back to doing things normally, running about my daily business. But I'm severely confused about the 3 week liquid diet. I was told I could have blended Soups, jellies, Custard...those kids of things. The other day I had a bunch of humous dip (I thought, blended chickpeas, some Protein, would be fine) and I felt incredibly full afterwards, and uncomfortable. My fault, I know. But I feel like now I can eat solids...I just had a few (GASP!) potato chips. Have I potentially destroyed everything and caused the band to slip into oblivion? Has anyone else out there cheated while on liquids? What are the repercussions?

I feel like I can eat mushies now and it's fine - essentially mashed foods are what I've been eating.

Btw I do feel discomfort and nausea, and I've stopped feeling as full as I did the initial few days after having half cups of fluids.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

It sounds like you're healing normally and I too was on soft foods 3 weeks post-op. Because it takes 4-6 weeks for healing, most surgeons do not advise solids until week 5 but check with yours to see what he/she advises.

Since you don't have a fill, you didn't damage anything by eating a few potato chips. Carbs begin to be digested in the MOUTH so stop worrying. As the swelling goes down, you'll feel less full and begin looking forward to a first fill.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
