Abdominal binder from hospital

Recommended Posts

Just wondering how long you guys wore your abdominal binder after your surgery. My surgeon said 2 weeks but I will be 2 weeks out tomorrow and thinking about wearing it longer. Now I feel weird when it is not on!

Hi, congrats on your surgery. I didn't have a binder for my surgery, however, when I had my abdominal hysterectomy I had one. I would say to wear it as long as you need to. I wore my binder for several weeks after my surgery until I felt better. You'll know when you don't need it anymore. :)

I didn't get a binder (had AGB) but for about 4 - 5 days, moving around wasn't 100% comfortable unless I held a pillow against me. It had more to do with helping support the weight of my pannus that with the compression, but it made a heckuva difference. It also helped to sleep with a pillow tucked under my saggy stomach, so it didn't hang. It's nice that you were givena binder, I can imagine it will really do wonders for your mobile comfort level.

I wore mine until i didn't feel i needed it anymore.

Everyone is different and has different pain thresholds.

I had to make my own. They didn't give me one which I didn't quite understand. With our bellies not being tucked in I could feel it pulling on the incisions. My big incision is still giving me problems and i am almost month out, but with my binder I can pretty much do everything. It sucks it all in. I figure I will wear it until I am able to hold my own tummy in without pain and can work out without pain. Not working out yet. I wore a chest binder when I had breast reduction surgery for a month. It just holds everything in place while it all heals. Makes sense to me.

I am still wearing it most of the day now. It feels good to my incisions but sometimes gets hot and itchy so I take a break for a couple of hours a day from it. Think I will need a smaller one soon! It must be stretched out plus I am shrinking!! I also wash it every other day so I do not think it will last forever. I might have to shop for a new one!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
