I am having the Vertical Sleeve surgery done on July 11. Am I scared? Yes definately ... but the final results are worth it. I have fought this 2 week liquid diet for only one week now and there are days i think I'm going to go nuts, is it really the food or the fact that I can't have it? Actually, sacrificies will have to become a main part of My "new Skinny life".

I too have young children and I fear the typical questions of a general antisetic. But everything will be worth it in the end. I have struggled with weight, now diabetes, for far too long. I am ready to make change and will keep all you others in my prayers as well.

I am seeing Dr. Fearing with Malley Weight Loss Center in Overland Park, KS So far so good!

I think you hit the nail on the head. When you say you're ready to make a change. Obesity is like a runaway train and it makes us feel pretty helpless and hopeless. WLS let's us regain control and it's very liberating. At least I think it is.

Yes, the liquid diet sucks, but what a small price to pay...right?

I wish you the very best now and throughout your journey.

Welcome to the forums and good luck with your surgery next week. I'll be having mine done the day after you. Yeah, the pre-op diet is crazy. I just went through 3 days of serious cravings. I did cave yesterday - but that was to have Wendy's chili and their new salad - berry almond chicken. Boy they were good. But it wasn't strictly speaking on my pre-op diet list. Before that, I was craving pizza, so I think I did a "good cave" if there is such a thing. Today though, it's back to the pre-op diet. Most of mine was "head hunger" - where my head was trying to play tricks on me. That's something that I think we all go through. Change is tough.

You'll do just fine with the surgery. You're fears are normal, but the chances of having a complication are really low. Just keep in mind the reasons why you are having the surgery and that will help. It sounds like you have been doing that already. Yes, the results will be worth this.

Welcome, I'm having my surgery on the 11th also. I wouldn't say the pre op sucks, I don't mind the shakes, but with me, my first week I was on vacation, then we have the 4th and parties, and on the 7th is our wedding anniversary. That is what has been hard for me. I do get to eat one meal per day, so it hasn't been to bad. But I could have made better choices on a few of those days. But I'm losing, so it is working.

Good luck. Only one more week for us. :D

I, too, am having the sleeve surgery on July 11th with Dr. Fearing and Dr. Malley! I have struggled with the liquid diet. I have found that the Carnation sugar free instant Breakfast drink is really good! I do have to admit that I have cheated a bit but am seeing results!

I look forward to meeting you in 1 week!

You will LOVE Dr. Fearing she is great and she really cares about her patients. She did my surgery on April 11th. I have had a couple of complications (no fault of hers) and she is all over them.

MAKE NOTE: Do not let them keep your IV in the same hand over 2 days. I was at Menorah an they did that to me an it caused me to get Thrombosis in my left arm and it is very painful for over a month all because they got a little lazy and didn't want to move it. If it starts to hurt/burn do not let them push any more fluids till they switch it to the other arm. They were awesome to me besides that, but just make sure. From what I read on the forums Malley's keeps us in the hospital a little longer then some I think with 3 days, so the risk is greater. Keep us posted on how it goes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
