Had VSG 2 days ago...

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery just 2 days ago and I was discharged from the hospital yesterday. The gas pain is pretty bad. When does it start getting better? When do I physically start feeling normal? I just need some words of wisdom and comfort.

You will feel better everyday; so be careful, it's easy to over-do it. The first few days for me were difficult due to the whole sipping thing. I finally got to my 64 oz minimum on the 4th day. The first week I felt real fuzzy due to the anesthesia. The second week is when my soreness (not bad though) from the incisions kicked in. My stomach muscles felt so weak for the 2nd and 3rd week. The 4th week is when I felt pretty normal; no more muscle soreness and my energy level felt pretty normal. I am almost 7 weeks out and feel like I can drink pretty normaly- just not huge gulps. My eating habits also feel pretty normal to me now (although quite different than before surgery). It was all very worth it to me! Good luck to you and hang in there. A week from now you will look back and wonder where time has gone.

Hang in there! I know how hard that first week can be. I had a horrible time on day 3 & 4 because I just wanted something besides Clear liquids. I can tell you that I started taking my PPI at night instead of the morning and that helped a lot because when you wake up in the morning your stomach is already empty and add to that you are at the end of your PPI b/c it's once every 24 hours. I also stopped taking my liquid pain meds b/c I think that was causing more discomfort than good b/c of taking it on an empty stomach. Just do what you can to get through this first week and PLEASE know that it gets better!!! We've all been there and it's like childbirth when you look back and it's a distant memory. ;)

Week two was SO much better for me and it will seem like your life revolves around what and when to eat/drink for a while but I promise it won't be that way forever. I am at my 3 month mark and life is just blissfully normal now. So hang in there!!!! Keep us posted on how you're doing. And like everyone says....sip, sip, sip. Worry about your fluids more than Protein this first week. Especially in this heat....you do NOT want to get dehydrated. Take care of yourself and rest!

Xoxo,

Lanette

Congratulations, although right now you are probably thinking "why didn't anyone tell me?"

Remember you have just had surgery so life is a little difficult right now. Yes, each day gets better. Understand you are relearning basic habits and your body is trying to recover. Rest, take a sip or so every 15 minutes during the day so you stay hydrated and to help with the gas pain, walk - even if it is not that far.

Hugs to you and remember, soon you will be encouraging others through this first week. I love my sleeve!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
