Losing weight during 6mo supervised diet

Recommended Posts

So I posted this question elsewhere and no one has really commented on it. I'm going to try again here and see if any of you can offer advice.

I know we have to lose weight to prove to our insurance companies that we're serious about changing our lifestyles, but here's my question: what happens if I'm super successful during this six months and the insurance company is like, "good job....keep it up and you won't need surgery"....would they do something like that?

I sure hope this doesn't sound paranoid, but it's something I've thought about and I can be totally honest with you guys. ;)

Anyone else wondering the same thing? What if we lose too much weight during the supervised diet?

I have never heard of that happening. I think the only way I would be concerned with it was if your weight loss put you in the normal range for your height. Do you have a lot to lose and/or a high BMI?

I asked my nutritionist at the hospital the same thing. I started with a BMI of 54 - she said she was not worried about me losing too much - I think I would have to get under 40 to have any issues with losing too much. I suppose if one does have a lower BMI it may very well be an issue.

Like most folks I do well with losing for quite a while - then I burn out and it slowly creeps back on so I am not worried i will lose too much haha.

My insurance specifies that they use the BMI from the start to qualify for surgery.

Unfortunately my weight just fluctuated in a 20 pound radius during my diet. My start weight was 310, my end weight was 302. HOWEVER, when I went to the surgeon, I must have been having a great week, because I was down to 292. Insurance still approved. I think it varies from insurance to insurance, but if you aren't sure, you can always call and ask them what their politics and procedures are to get an approval. Good luck!
