Oh, so THAT's what dumping feels like

Recommended Posts

I don't get it ....I really did think the dumping thing was for gbypass people....I thought not having to deal with this is one of the benefits of the vsg. So does it get better the longer out of surgery you are? Thanks, Tracy

No, it is NOT just for RnY folks... and for me, yes the symptoms are just as loud and proud as they ever were. I'm almost 10 Months post op.

This happens to me very randomly, I just never know what will do it. The good thing is, I can eat a few bites of anything, but on some things, I better stop at one or two or it's trouble. I was eating some of those sour patch kids...love those....and I ate maybe 6 of them one night and all was well. Of course, the next night, I decided they went down so well, that I could get a few more, probably ate 10 or 12.....YOWSA....straight to the bathroom. NOT a good night. So, the key for me is moderation.smile.gif

My surgeon said that if you can't tolerate something when you first try it you can always try it again at a later time. Sometimes it takes time before you can tolerate something. Although if you have a bad experience it is hard to take another chance on it.

I got it the worse from cheese cake at the cheese cake factory. I had to lay down in the mall on a couch I found for an hour. The room was literally spinning. I've had it's lot of times and it's always if it's something with both fat and sugar.

When I went to Buenos Aires on my "eat what I want to eat" vacation, I too had dumping -- was not pleasant and I found that I just couldn't eat whatever I wanted to . . . it was easier eating the new normal. High fat and sugar seem to be the culprit, so I stay away now -- now that's not to say that I don't have a bite of something sugary here and there, but I just can't have and entire piece of something if I wanted it. But I'm ok with that -- keeps me from bingeing on those things that I used to binge on :)

Like Tiffany said this can happen to ANYONE at any time. I experienced it A LOT years before surgery, especially after I had my gallbladder removed. I haven't experienced it much at all since surgery though which is Great! I wouldn't even say I get dumping from Ice Cream because it doesn't happen even in the same day that I eat it but the next day I will have "the runs" all day, same thing with buttercreme frosting!

Alright guys, help a sleeve researcher out. I don't want to make assumptions. Sorry if this makes any of you uncomfortable. What is "bathroom episode" a euphemism for? Vomiting? Diarrhea? Gas? All of the above? Gotta just say it like it is with me. :)

For me it was a very painful sense or urgency with violent, watery stools.

TMI but just being honest. Totally not worth it.

The only silver lining is that I lost about four ounces after I was done, lol. Is it sick that I weigh myself after taking a poo?

It is exactly what USMC just described. It's really intense and with me it also came with rapid heartbeat, feverish, clammy, room spinning dizzy, nausea (no vomiting) and just overall bad feeling. It's not really something I EVER want to feel again. It's for that reason I've never drank another glass of real milk and don't even CONSIDER eating any ice cream. Sugar and Fat does give me these feelings but because I'm so scared of feeling it to that extent again, I usually only indulge a little bit. However there was one time that I messed up my stomach for days and had to do 24 hour Clear liquids just to feel better.

:) HTH

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
