Gallstones or bad gas or constipation?

Recommended Posts

Hello all -

:help:

For more than a week, I have been experiencing VERY painful gas and not really able to have a bowel movement (very constipated)

My lower abdomen is sooooo sore, I can't lay on my stomach. When I try to pass gas, it is very painful in my rectum area and sends a shooting pain all through me. I've also been more sick / nauseated than usual.

I had the PBs over the weekend and vomited (got too excited with the holiday and my family reunion) and over ate. I wonder if this is just a result of that or if you guys think it might be gallstones from the somewhat rapid weightloss. I don't want to be running to the dr for bad gas when I could buy some OTC stuff - but at the same time, I don't want to make the problem worse.

Have any of you had gallstones? If so, what were you symptoms?

:help:

My symptoms were different. The pain was up higher and to the right side, going around to my back. Pretty much under the ribcage to the shoulder blade. I didn't have any probems with Constipation. I didn't feel nauseated, just an ache to sharp pain that wouldn't go away no matter how I sat or layed down or whatever.

I'd go in, or at least call. Being constipated can be an issue of it's own. I speak from experience, having gotten so bad I thought it was my appendix and ending up in the ER with an enama(yeah, probably TMI!).

My surgeon put me on Urso for 6 months after surgery to prevent gallstones. Although he said that the preop tests showed I had some gravel in there already. So I guess atleast as long as I'm taking this med, I shouldn't have any problems with it. I have also heard that gall bladder attacks are usually a much higher pain than in the lower stomach.

I was extremely constipated for 4 days. Rolling stomach pains and contradtractions when on the john. Finally, DH got me an enema. That helped. I started eating Activia for 3 days and now regular. It says to eat one a day for two weeks and it guarantees you to get regular. Its in the yogurt section. When I tried the benefiber tablets I think that made it worse. Try this first and see if you can get unclogged.

I had Constipation post-op as well, the Dr. recommended Milk of Magnesia for it, which worked well for me. It sounds to be like you're suffering from really bad constipation, it can cause all the symptoms you describe. Treat the constipation and see if it does the trick, it may take care of all of it, and if not, then you'll know something else is also bothering you. You've gone a long time without a movement, that's going to cause a lot of pain and discomfort.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
