Documentation from weight loss program?

Recommended Posts

I am just starting this whole process. I called the insurance Co. and they sent me a list of requirements they need before approval. One of them is *Documentation from multidisciplinary non surgical weight loss program with unsuccessful weight loss or weight loss followed by weight gain* They don't say for how long? I have been on a million diets, just none of them have been supervised. Does this mean I have to do the supervised diet thing? Already getting frustrated and I have just started!

I think I should have posted this in the Insurance questions section. Sorry I'm new. :)

Yup. You have to do the supervised diet thing. It's really not that bad and will be over before you know it. If you have Blue Cross, it will be 6 months. If you have Aetna, it will be 12 weeks. And ask if you have to lose a certain amount of weight on this program. Many times you don't but there are occasions where it's required.

Congratulations on your decision and good luck!

My insurance paperwork said that too, but when I got to the surgeon's office they just had some sheets to fill out and I had to list the diets I've tried and failed at and the dates I tried them. There was never any "documentation" concerning the diets required by the surgeon.

Yes it has to be supervised. I went to a weightloss doctor and he prescribed me adipex for 3 months and that was enough for insurance to use for documentation that I had been on a supervised weightloss program. The insurance lady at my surgeon's office said that a supervised weight program could also be seeing the dietician for 3 months before surgery, I didn't have to do that though because they approved me before the I even finished a month of seeing my dietician. What insurance do you have? I have BlueCross BlueShield FEP (federal employee program).

I Have PCIP-ca it's the new pre-existing insurance plan through the govt. Many people don't know about it, it's pretty new. I got turned down for insurance for a pre-existing condition so I applied for this and I got it. The premiums are kinda high, but they cover WLS! I'm crossing my fingers (and my toes) that I have the same experience as you and don't have to do a diet. I just want to move on with my life!

Hello, I also have BCBS Federal and I am using Dr. Nicholson of Baylor Plano. I go to the NUT again this month for the 3 month supervised diet requirement, but I am not losing any weight. Did you lose weight with the adipex? What weightloss dr did you use? I will appriecate any advice you can give me, thanks.

Hi, I used Dr. Kent in Arlington (dietdoctorkent.com) I lost 27 lbs on my 1st 3 months of adipex. My bestfriend goes to Dr. Trammell in Desoto, he has other offices from what I've heard. They used my 3 mth diet on adipex (which was a year prior) to meet that requirement and I also saw the NUT twice before surgery. If you have any more questions feel free to ask me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
