I'mWiththeBand 0 Posted July 7, 2006 I am scheduled for banding 7/17/06. Yesterday I had an endoscopy. My Dr. said I had a small hiatal hernia but not to worry about it. I was pretty groggy when he told me this so I asked him again when I was in recovery and he asked if I had acid reflux or heartburn. I said "no" and he said it won't be a problem. I asked if it need to be fixed and he said he wouldn't know until he was in there but didn't think so. I am concerned that this hernia might get worse with the band or otherwise screwup the effectiveness of the band. Does anyone out there have any experience with a hiatal hernia found before banding? Thanks. Jack
Kayford 0 Posted July 7, 2006 Hi, I had a hiatal hernia and they fixed it in surgery before they put the band on. I was banded by Dr. Ortiz in Tijuina and he said he had to fix it prior to putting the band on. I had not had an endoscopy and did not think I had much heartburn but now I realize that I did. I never have any heartburn now. So I would say if the hernia prohibits them from placing the band correctly then he will have to repair your hernia when he gets in there. Good luck and let us know how it goes for you.
leatha_g 4 Posted July 7, 2006 I would definitely encourage him to go ahead and repair it while he's there. Unrepaired hiatal hernias and slippage seem to go hand in hand. Better to do it the first time in. You'll never know he touched it. Good luck!
