Pre-Op Diet day 3

Recommended Posts

I have now tortured myself for three days. I haven't cheated even once. Yet, the scale is not moving? I am eating between 500-700 calories a day and I walk 4 miles every evening. What the heck?? I am drinking tons of Water and only eating the Medifast stuff and a few sugar free popscicles!! This is rather frustrataing!

Uuuuuugh!

Leslie

Don't give up. Your body is going 'WTF?!' and holding on to every last bit it can because it thinks it is starving. It'll settle down, just give it time. This is why they say for us to stay at 1200 cals or above - our bodies go into starvation-mode on anything lower and don't want to give up the goods.

But it's okay! Just stay on-track and the weight will start coming down. It takes a little while.

Good luck, and congrats on making it through the first 3 days - they're always the hardest!

My surgeon's office says to not weigh yourself everyday - only do it once a week at the very most because it often will "mess with you" .

I started my pre-op today. My surgeon only does a 12 day pre-op instead of the 14 day that I originally thought it was. 4 Protein shakes per day plus 6 servings of "real food" that I get to pick from a list of 6 foods. Hmm... something strange about that. LOL

Anyway, it's 8pm and I am full but still have 2 servings of real food to eat today. I'm going to try to do better tomorrow and make sure I get everything in. This is going to be hard from the perspective of eating everything they want me to! I had originally thought that I would be hungry during this phase, but that definitely isn't the case today.

Keep with it - the pounds will eventually come off. Make sure you are getting all of your Water too.

Yup, sounds like detox. I'm sure it will pass in a few days and you'll be fine.

I just did my food log for today and am SHOCKED at the numbers.

Calories: 1044.9

Fat: 16.5 g

Protein: 134.6 g

Carbs: 79.5 g

DANG.... and technically I still have 2 servings of food left to eat which I won't as it's too late now.

With those numbers, I wonder if I will get to detox. Most of my carbs are from skim milk which according to the directions from my doc, I have 4 times a day - with each of the Protein powder shakes. The instructions specifically state that if not mixing with milk, then add a 5th shake.

This was my first day of the diet. I didn't realize I would be having that many calories - but I suppose that's "normal". For some reason I thought it would be fewer calories during these 2 weeks. Of course, I did have 2 tablespoons of regular dressing for my salad - which that was 142 calories right there. I won't be doing that again (I ate at a restaurant while waiting for a movie - I had salad with chicken broth for the Soup - very filling oddly enough). But it's still 900 calories that will be the same for the next 10 days.

It is soooo frustrating that all the docs have different docs. I would feel much better eating 1000 cals than the 500-700 I am getting. I am soooo grouchy. I feel sorry for my hubby and kids :(

I agree - it seems like they would all have more similar requirements. I've emailed the PA and dietician to make sure I'm doing their diet right. Of course being so late, I won't get an answer until sometime tomorrow I hope. I may be over-reacting with these numbers, but I want to make sure this whole thing is going to work for me. I thought I would be closer to the 500-700 calories - I think I would feel better about that. LOL

So far I am feeling better today. I hope it continues. It also helps my mental state that the boxes are starting to empty so it helps me feel like I am almost there. I try and "eat" every two to three hours. I am kinda concerend about what will happen when my last client goes into labor as there is no way to predict how long I will be at her house so I have NO IDEA how/what to pack food wise

Leslie I have an emergency pack that i carry with me in my purse (more like a large duffle bag for all my goodies). I have 3 Atkins bars that have a good number of Protein and of course low carbs. I also have Atkins shakes as they are pre-mixed again great Protein low carbs and some mozzeralla cheese sticks for a quick boost. I always have bottles of Water with me. I have this just in case in am out and can't get to my planned food. It has helped me a couple of times. I hope that will help you for you last client's birth? Are you a mid-wife??? How exciting the must be!!!!! the Atkins are a little pricey ($5.89 for 4 at WalMart) but worth it if you are in a pinch. You are doing great and YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!!!!

Well, I just heard back from the dietician. She told me that they do not want patients to drop too low in their calorie intake before surgery and that it was ok to only have 4 of the 6 servings of "real food" per day. Whew. Apparently the amount of Protein and carbs isn't concerning them as she told me I was doing well with the pre-op diet.

I don't know if you are allowed sf Jello on your pre-op diet, but if you are, you could get some of those sf Jello cups. I would just get a bag together that has bottles of Water and toss in some of your medifast. If you can have things like yogurt or veggies, have them packed into ziplock baggies for the right portion size and when you need to go - just toss them in your bag as well. It just takes a bit of planning is all. :)

I am glad to hear that you are feeling better, Leslie. Detox is always the hardest. I have actually GAINED a pound so far going on the low-carb as my body tries to figure out what the heck I am doing up here in brain-land. Poor body. It's in for a real shocker in a couple weeks! LOL

I usually have emergency cheese sticks and some emergency pepperoni around - Hormel makes a turkey pepperoni that is low in fat AND low carb and I am all about it right now while the hunger wears off - for some reason switching to low carb always makes me hungry for the first little while.

Wait!!! 80g of carbs is considered low enough to cause detox symptoms? Wow. It's funny how we all vary. I had to stay below 30 for a while for the dizzy, headache, lethargy thing to happen.

I think part of my sluggish feeling is due to going 1/2 caffiene for my coffee. I have not went totally caffiene free yet. Next week will do the Decaf coffee. One week at a time. LOL No headaches though, so I'm thankful.

Leslie, I think the emergency bag idea. Maybe that will work for you.

Good luck ladies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
