Hey there, I've been told by the nutrionist that I'm not supposed to be using a straw because it helps put gas in the stomach, but yet, I find that I can sip easier through a straw at a slower pace as required with the new sleeve. So, what are you're ideas about this?

I was told at the hospital to drink through a straw as you sip better and not gulp.. if you gulp you take in more gas... im from the UK so i guess were told differently... i hope this has been useful

During my pre-op teaching, the PA said that there was no solid evidence that drinking through a straw produced more gas - so if we wanted to we could.

My nutritionist said no straw. Yet, in the hospital I was given straws with everything. I tried both ways and especially in the beginning, using a straw helped me to drink slower. I was real bad at gulping down liquids and even a year out, if I drink too fast it bothers my stomach.

My surgeon said straws are fine. I didn't notice any difference using a straw or not, still burped after every sip either way.

I was told no straw by my nut but given a straw in recovery. The nurse said "no straw" was ridiculous and it wouldn't add any air.

I tried it both ways & found I too could get more liquids in with a straw. I did not have any issues and use a straw to this day.

I was told no straw and found that I did in fact take in more air with the straw. I think it can be a matter of what works best for you. I gave up the straw for comfort reasons.

I was told no straws but I always have used them and I'm still guilty time to time of using them. It does create gas but I'm more comfy using them and I sip better as well with them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
