FIrst day on protein shakes...so far so good!

Recommended Posts

Well a few days ago I was knee deep in a big ole pity party...regretting I had it done. Then I went to the hospital and got IV fluids and feel like a new woman! Today I was given the go ahead to do Protein Shakes and so far I've gotten in 3oz in about an hour. Is this about right for the first time doing shakes? I used vanilla Chike with a tiny drop of almond extract and mixed with water...it tastes like wedding cake...LOVE IT. I'm going to try to get the rest in as the day goes on. How much were you able to get in at one sitting when you first started drinking them?

Thanks so much :)

I have done the same thing will all my liquids since the first few days- set my alarm and drink 2 ounces, then set my phone alarm again (15 minutes at first).

Now I can drink a lot more and I set it to 8 minutes but can get all my Water and all my Protein in this way!

Good luck and full speed ahead! I love the strawberry chike with banana and strawberries added. (after you are allowed those).

When i was first sent home, I was to drink 1oz every 15minutes for the first week. Then 2oz every 15 minutes and work my way up to 40oz a day in week 3.

I now can drink like a fish at 7 weeks out! I always could drink more than I was supposed to. Never had any issue with liquids. They don't fill me up or give me restriction. I did, in the begining, feel a tightness in my chest if I drank too fast, but it would go away quickly.

Just sip, sip, sip. Maybe a sip a minute and you will have that shake down in no time. If it is too fast for you, you will feel it.

Kelly :)

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
