Dr. C question - Hardness around port

Recommended Posts

I was banded in June 2003. In January 2004 I began a long journey with my final diagnosis being SLE/Fibromyalgia/Panhypopituitarism. Yikes! Due to high dose steriods and polypharmacy my band was unfilled to 1cc which is minimal restriction. Over the past couple of months I am beginning to notice the area around my port is becoming hard and the area is slowly increasing in size. In April I was hospitalized for adrenal crisis due to gastroenteritis and a EGD was done and everything was ok. Due to steriods I had gained 50 pounds but now I am down 55 pounds but since April and the IV steriods I have the "moon face" starting and some thickening up in my waist area. I am definitely watching what I eat and I haven't gained any additional weight. Yeah!

I am going into my doc about the hardening around the port. No pain or anything but I can honestly say if I had known what was before me I would have never been banded. I have enough to deal with.

What do you think about this? The area is probably now about 5" from one side to the other.

Thanks,

Tre Appling

Honestly, I have no idea, I've never seen anything like this before.

I had a harder tissue build up too and was told scar tissue, but it went down a little farther along after banded. I can still feel some hardness but I am guessing it is just some scar tissue left.

I have a lot of scar tissue aroung my port....a lot ....some people just makes scar tissue and as I have had a lot of little fills and unfill....it just seems to get a little more all the time...lumpy.....the dr says it is still ok...when I do plastics they will move the port and take the scar tissue away...

I've noticed lately hardening around my port. I too have had a lot of little fills & unfills. Scar tissue makes perfect sense. That is why I love this site!!! Lets me know I'm not crazy when I come up with strange symptoms. There's usually someone else out there with similar experiences!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
